SHARP, CHARLES W., was born in Morrisville, Madison county, August 12, 1842, and is a son of Charles H. Sharp, a mechanic, who came with his family to New York Mills in 1853 and died in Wisconsin in 1886.
Sherrill received his education in New Hartford, and in Utica, and was for several years a salesman in an importer's house at New York; but in 1863 went to the front with the 23d Brooklyn Regiment, and was in service three months, going out as a private soldier, and returning as lieutenant.
SMITH, DEWITT CLINTON, was born in Trenton, Oneida county, January, 22, 1854, son of John H. and Martha (Harbeck) Smith, natives of New York and Connecticut respectively.

 Cayuga County, New York Genealogical Records Information
Cayuga County was formed from Onondaga March 8, 1799.
The first settlement in the present County was made in 1878 by Roswell Franklin at Aurora, but the subsequent influx of emigrants was rapid and great, for in 1800 there were more than 15,000 people in the new County.
The forming of the County in 1799 became necessary because the Cayuga section was outgrowing the mother County, or rather that part of it in which the courts were held.

The 1st Sheet of DeWitt's State Map of New York is dated circa 1792 or 1793 and displays the military tract area, minus the township of Sterling (A.K.A. Stirling).
New York's quota, based on population, was 4 regiments, but as late as March 1781 only two regiments had been activated.
The former Cayuga Indian Reservation area included all of the current Town of Springport, (including the Village of Union Springs), and portions of the current Towns of Aurelius, Ledyard (including the northern portion of the Village of Aurora), and part of the Town of Montezuma.
