The Ausable River is known as the premier trout stream in the East.
Swimmers may choose the river or the swimming pool to escape the heat and soak in the waters.
Ausable River Campsite also hosts several special themed weekends throughout the summer including July 4th celebrations with music in the pavilion and a parade, Pirates Weekend in mid-July featuring treasure hunts, and a Western Hoedown Weekend at the beginning of August with a professional square dance caller and a live country band.

 Ausable
Sims, commanding United States Naval Forces in European waters, was authorized to assume custody of Ausable on a bare-ship basis, manning her with a Navy crew and operating her for the Army.
Reaching Bordeaux via Verdon-sur-Mer on 6 December, Ausable completed discharging her cargo by the 12th and, two days later, embarked the officers and men from the cargo ship Lake Bloomingion—which had run aground on the llth and had been abandoned as a total loss—for transportation to England.
Ausable operated with the American Transatlantic Co. until when she was sold to the Foreign Transport and Mercantile Corp., also of New York.

Most of the fishing action for salmon occurs during spring on the flatwater section from the Route 9 bridge downstream two miles to the river's mouth.
Portage-sized boats can be carried from a parking area in the Ausable Point Campsite to the river itself, avoiding the lake.
While landowners near the Route 9 bridge have to date allowed fishing, much of the river further upstream, including the Ausable Chasm reach, is not available to the public for fishing.

The gradient (the river drops in elevation nearly 4,000 feet over a forty mile distance), along with many water falls and deep holding pools, provide plenty of places for the fish to take refuge during the winter months and hot periods of summer.
The AuSable is fished most heavily on weekends but from Monday until Friday, large portions of the stream are lonely stretches of water teeming with fish unbothered by flying lures and slashing lines.
Fishermen travel from all over to be on the river during this hatch and if you've never seen the drake hatch when the spinners come back in the evening to lay their eggs, then you haven't experienced the greatest thrill of fly fishing.

Access to the Upper Ausable Chasm has not been possible due to the high gorge walls, and private and secured property owned by the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation and the Ausable Chasm Company.
