The Auschwitz Album is a unique photographic record of the Holocaust of the Second World War.
A collection of photographs taken inside a Nazi death camp, it is the only surviving pictorial evidence of the extermination process from inside the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp (with the exception of three additional photographs taken by inmates who were issued with Sonderkommandos).
The album's survival is remarkable, given the strenuous efforts made by the Nazis to keep the Final Solution a secret.

I knew a lady who was a Hungerian Jew who arrived at Auschwitz in that time frame.
I used this book when at Auschwitz earlier this year - it put the whole place in context.

Since the photo was first published in 1978 it was not reprinted before inclusion on the 1999 Simon Wiesenthal Center website, which means the smoke was added in early 1999 just before the photo was shown on the site.
