Women & The Holocaust - Personal Reflections
The history of Auschwitz is magnified through this double lens of factual historical evidence and the way it is presented in the construct of the trial.
The understanding of these legal issues is imperative in order to fully appreciate the trial proceedings themselves: the atmosphere in the courtroom, the strategies adopted and unfolded by the prosecution and the defence, and the role of the judge in arbitrating such a complex trial.
In their trial testimonies, as in their written testimonies and memoirs, most of the women who appeared on the stand at the Auschwitz Trial told of their daily activities as a backdrop to their more specific testimony about the crimes of the defendants on trial.

review of Wittmann, Auschwitz Trial, 2006
Newspaper publications played a huge role in bringing the trial to the public, but it can be argued that their skewed view, which primarily focused on the atrocities of the Holocaust and not on the trial itself, contributed to the German public’s collective guilt resting on the shoulders of the defendants on trial.
One of the earliest Nazi trials was the Nuremberg trial of 1945.
Wittmann feels that the Auschwitz trial is Germany’s first major attempt to confront the country’s past, but the way the media portrayed the events of the trial to the public, separated the public from their contribution to the Nazi past.

Although the SS in Auschwitz would eventually copy the euthanasia method of mass killing—with gas chambers, crematoria, and the stripping of gold teeth from corpses—it used hydrogen cyanide, known by the trade name Zyklon B, rather than carbon monoxide.
Langbein was transferred to Auschwitz because of the need there for extra personnel to assist in the battle against epidemics; he was assigned to the inmate infirmary in the main camp as a nurse.

Wittmann's study of the Frankfurt Auschwitz trial is an excellent contribution both to our knowledge of this important trial and to our understanding of how the legal process shapes historical memory.

But it was perhaps precisely because the trial did not deal only with leading members of the SS, but with their underlings, that the case and the detailed media coverage that accompanied it provided West Germans with their first comprehensive picture of the seemingly banal daily routine of the ghastly extermination machinery at Auschwitz.
The trial, which required witnesses to recall the terrible events with the precision that is required in a criminal prosecution, often put excessive demands on the survivors.
The trial was scheduled to last 20 months and commenced in the Römer hall, at the time the only venue in Frankfurt capable of holding those involved in the proceedings.

As the Scopes monkey trial was to evolution, so was the David Irving libel trial to Auschwitz - or, more precisely, to what van Pelt aptly terms the "negationist" view.
He sought to debunk the Holocaust through an effort to demonstrate that Auschwitz was "just another" concentration camp, and not a death camp at all.
What made the Irving case, like the Scopes case before it, an epochal event, is that the trial reached not only the ultimate issues of the Holocaust, but yet more fundamental issues that confront both historians and lawyers every day.

In connection with their defense, Penguin and Lipstadt engaged architectural historian Robert Jan van Pelt to prepare for the court an expert report presenting the evidence for our knowledge that Auschwitz had been an extermination camp where up to one million Jews were killed, mainly in gas chambers.
Unique in its comprehensive assessment of the historical evidence for Auschwitz and devastating in its demolition of the arguments of Holocaust deniers against Auschwitz, van Pelt's book is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of the Holocaust and for those who seek to combat Holocaust denial.
