Taste: A sweet dream from Germany   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Auslese is so special that it gets put into the dreaded category of "special occasion" wine, which means it's bought infrequently and opened rarely.
Auslese wines are hard to describe, and if you wonder why, think about how you'd try to describe a great souffle to someone who has never had one.
Ausleses are also generally low in alcohol -- around 7.5 percent to 9 percent.

Ausleses put sweetness on the table
Ausleses are beloved by wine critics, who praise them but almost never tell you what to do with them.
A young auslese, bursting with sweet fruit flavors, is not necessarily the traditional German style.
Rheingau ausleses tend to be a little richer, while those from districts to the south, like Rheinhessen and the Pfalz, will generally be less acidic.

A young auslese, bursting with sweet fruit flavors, is not necessarily the traditional German style.
Indeed, Grandfather Loosen might not have recognized the 2005 Mönchhof auslese, from the Ürzig Würzgarten vineyard on the Mosel, a light, taut, balanced wine with aromas of apricot and river slate, which I found for $35 among the superb selection of ausleses at Crush Wine and Spirits on East 57th Street.
Rheingau ausleses tend to be a little richer, while those from districts to the south, like Rheinhessen and the Pfalz, will generally be less acidic.

Alfred Merkelbach Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Auslese 1998
A few weeks ago I featured one of my many purchases from the 2005 vintage in Germany, namely the 2005 Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett Trocken from JJ Christoffel, and at the time I mentioned that 2005 was the first vintage where I had purchased heavily since 2001.
Germany is featuring quite strongly on The Winedoctor at the moment, with my new German Wine Guide as well as new profiles for Christoffel, JJ Prüm, Loosen, von Kesselstatt and more, and so it only makes sense to open one of the bottles from these earlier vintages.
But this is no super-sweet Auslese; as I said above it must be creeping in at the very lower limit of the legally defined must weight for Mosel Auslese, as it has an ethereal presence and sprightly acidity, without any of the real, creamy, textured weight that one might expect from this Prädikat.

Accidental Hedonist - 2001 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Well, I probably shouldn't be, as there were some items on the wine label that let me know that this wine had some potential...Auslese, for example, is a good sign for me, as I like my Rieslings a tad sweet.
Auslese generally indicates more attention had been paid attention to the grape, having been picked at the peak of ripeness, or at least we hope.
Same could be said for the "Qualitätswein mit Prädikat", which of course goes to follow, as a German wine can only be deemed "Auslese" if it is "Qualitätswein mit Prädikat".

Weingut Kerpen Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2004 - Stirling Fine Wines   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
The Wine Advocate Kerpen’s 2004 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese – of which only one cask of around 100 cases were made – is, at least at this early date, the standout of his current collection.
The palate is creamy, rich, poised, elegant, and buoyant, calling to mind the uncanny balance of Christoffel’s “one star” Auslese.
A refined balance of fresh apple, vanilla and slate and spice is struck in a lingering finish that practically puts you in a trance.

Yet, I found that the Rieslings labeled auslese from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Nahe and Rheingau are the best of the vintage.
Light on its feet yet packed with flavor, this delicate auslese exudes passion fruit, peach and lime flavors supported by vibrant acidity.
Broad and powerful, this auslese pulls no punches in expressing its peach, passion fruit, citrus and mineral notes.

Spatlese and Auslese are two Riesling quality classifications based on the ripeness of the grapes when picked.
The late-harvest grapes that make Spatlese are less ripe than those for Auslese, which are hand selected and yield an intense, rich wine.
TWO AND A HALF STARS 2004 Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Auslese ($36) This is a nice wine from Dr. Loosen, though it barely sneaks into Auslese.
