Alfred Austell was a merchant, banker, financier, and railroad builder who organized the Atlanta National Bank, became one of the country's largest cotton dealers, and built railroads in several southern states.
Alfred Arthur Austell was born in eastern Tennessee on January 14, 1814, the younger son of Jane Wilkins and William Austell, a planter.
When the Civil War (1861-65) ended, Austell was a member of the committee that submitted resolutions congratulating the people of Atlanta on the end of the war, approving the appointment of the provisional governor, expressing a desire for the restoration of state government, and renewing old friendships and trade relations.

In 1852 was documented as a "Sax Horn Band" and prior to the First World War references to the St Austell Volunteer Band (Infantry) were made.
From 1919 to 1939 the band progressed well, and in that period contested with success at the Crystal Palace, but in 1940 was forced to disband, only to reform again in the early part of 1943.
St Austell Town Band has no sponsor, it is self supporting by means of its own Social Club, founded in 1969 and now boasts of fine premises with over 2000 members.
