Austin Allegro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Austin Allegro was a model of car manufactured by British Leyland under the Austin name from 1973 to 1982.
The 1750cc E-Series engine lifted from the Austin Maxi was prone to cylinder head gasket failure, and its five speed transmission had an truly awful gearchange linkage (a problem which also plagued the Maxi itself).
While many of these stories were greatly exaggerated; the national sport of "Allegro-bashing" was a popular pastime of the British tabloid press, and did the car no favours at all, despite frantic behind-the-scenes efforts by BL to iron out the numerous gremlins.

The Morris 1100 was a small family car built and sold by the British Motor Corporation and, later, British Leyland, from August 15, 1962 to June 1974, developed under the ADO16 codename.
It spawned many badge-engineered versions, including the twin-cam MG 1100, the Vanden Plas Princess (from October 1962), the Austin 1100 (August 1963), and finally the Wolseley 1100 and Riley Kestrel.
The Mark II versions of the Austin and Morris models were announced, with the larger engine making it into these two makes' ranges in October 1967 (as the Austin 1300 and Morris 1300).

The same fate befell the 1100, Sadly, largely forgotten in the UK - save for the occasional ill informed 'how shite were those cars!' remark made by pub bores.

 icNewcastle - The Austin 1100
The 1100 was based on that other BMC stalwart the Morris 1100 saloon launched one year earlier and the customers loved it.
The Austin followed the normal pattern of in-house BMC 'badge engineering' which for the Austin version of the 1100 meant the trademark 'wavy' Austin grille, badges and a unique dashboard featuring a rather bizarre 'strip' speedometer.
Even so, the 1100 was a car for its time and gave a definite pointer as to the design excellence Britain could attain before it washed its home-grown mass-produced car industry down the drain.

The Allegro 1100 and 1300 used the trusty A-series engine and the well proved Hydralastic suspension system which gave the Allegro an impeccable ride.
The main criticism at the time was the Allegro's peculiar styling which was not to everybody's taste to say the least, the interior became famous for its quirky "square" steering wheel, which quietly disappeared on later MKII cars!
