The Austin A30 - classic British car
The A30, or 'baby Austin' as it was known early in its life, is as popular now as it has ever been, with both restored and original low mileage examples still a common sight at classic car shows up and down Britain.
Austin had enjoyed great success with their range of small cars prior to WW2 - namely the Austin 7s, 8s, and 10s, and continued after hostilities producing the alligator-bonnet 8 and 10 saloons.
Visually not dissimilar to the A30, albeit slightly less curvy, the 8 was also powered by an 803cc ohv 4 cylinder unit, of their own design (the 10 had a 948cc version of the same engine), and was keenly priced at a whisker under the A30's asking price.

Austin Motor Company - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Herbert Austin (1866–1941), later Sir Herbert, the former manager of the Wolseley Tool and Motor Car Company founded The Austin Motor Company in 1905, at Longbridge, which was then in Worcestershire (Longbridge became part of Birmingham in 1911 when its boundaries were expanded).
With the help of the Seven Austin weathered the worst of the depression and remained profitable through the 1930s producing a wider range of cars which were steadily updated with the introduction of all-steel bodies, Girling brakes, and synchromesh gearboxes but all the engines remained as side valve units.
The principle of a transverse engine with gearbox in the sump and driving the front wheels was carried on to larger cars with the 1100 of 1963, the 1800 of 1964, the Maxi of 1969, the Allegro of 1973 and the Metro of 1980.

 Austin A30 - Motorbase
Austin, who at the time were arch enemies of the Nuffield Organisation (owner of Morris), quickly realised that they needed their own small car to compete with this newcomer.
In 1951 Austin unveiled its answer to the Minor, the Austin A30, powered by an all new 803cc, four cylinder, OHV engine known as the A-series.
The A30 was a much smaller car than the Minor, its narrower body providing accommodation for 4 people and came only as a 4 door saloon to start with.

 Austin A30 & A35 Car & Van Buying Guide
The A30 was unveiled at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1951, the earliest examples still wearing the Seven badge which so many motorists would associate with the cars famous pre-war namesake.
The A30 was Austins first foray into the mysterious world of unitary construction (ie no separate chassis).
This engine went on to be used in many different Austin, Morris and BMC products as the 1950s and 1960s rolled on, with its use continuing (in much modified form) in the last of the proper Minis at the end of the 1990s.

Austin A30 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Introduced in 1951 as the "New Austin Seven", it was Austin's answer to the Morris Minor.
Its newly-designed A-Series straight-4 engine was state of the art for the time and returned an average fuel consumption of 42 mpg / under 7L/100 km.
Despite originally only being offered as a 4-door saloon, 2-door variants were introduced in 1953, and in 1954 a van and van-based "countryman" estate were made available, which would also later become the basis of a rather odd looking utility (pick-up).

The revolutions per mile are for MPH speedometers assuming the use of the 5/13 speedometer drive ratio used by all smooth and ribbed A-series gearboxes except 803cc.
It is straightforward to convert the A30 gearbox to the 5/13 ratio, for use with the later speedometers using the worm and pinion from any later gearbox.
The casing is also usually marked with the ratio on the uppermost side of the case next to the attachment flange, to the left hand side of the centre line looking towards the rear of the car.

 Car-derived vans/pick-ups
For many years, the small and medium-sized Austin and Morris vans produced by BMC were almost as familar a sight on British roads as the cars on which they were based.
Effectvely replacing both the Austin A55 and Morris Minor vans, the Marina-based models were briefly sold in identical Austin- and Morris-badged versions before being cunningly rebadged as "Austin Morris".
Logic may have suggested that the Austin A55 pick-up would be superceded by a Farina-style model, but in the world of commercial vehicles, there was often little incentive to replace a tried and tested model purely for cosmetic considerations.

 Engines: A-series
As a result, the A-Series engine enjoyed something of an "Indian Summer" being, as it was, the power unit for the Austin Metro during the whole of the 1980s.
It also saw service in the Austin Maestro/Montego and without the disadvantage of the somewhat flawed transmission-in-sump layout; it would prove to be a reliable and strong performer in these cars.
Eventually, an engine called K-Series did replace the A-Plus, but it was not the same engine as that from 1972 - and it took a radical change in thinking to produce something significantly better - and this would not arrive until 1989.
