Austin's first overhead value engine, the 2199cc Sixteen, was fitted in the 1940 12 body and chassis in 1945, though independent front suspension had to wait for the 1948 Princess and Sheerline and the 1.2 litre A40.
Austin and Morris merged in 1952 to form the British Motor Corporation and that year saw the appearance of the A30 with 803cc ohv engine, it was also Longbridge's first unitary construction car.
New models in 1955 included the Cambridge with A40 or A50 power units, together with the Westminster, which was fitted with a 2.6 litre six, Farina styling was a feature of the 1959 range, which saw further rationalization with MG, Morris, Wolseley and Riley offering badge-engineered versions of the Austin Cambridge theme.

The Austin A30 is a 2- or 4-doorr small vehicle the Austin motor company after the 2nd world war were first of all only means vehicles and upper class vehicles in the production program.
The Austin 7 was produced no longer and painfully was missed by the clientele, that was not able to afford the larger vehicles.
In the year 1951, Austin introduced an entirely new vehicle: The new model A30 was formed and had in the modern Pontonform for the first time an even deceit car body with only 3414 mm lengths and 1378 mm of width.

 Austin A40 Somerset BMC Saloon
The Somerset was a short-lived replacement for the even more upright 'Austin of England' A40 Devon and Dorset models of the postwar years.
The Somersets owner was after something a little more suitable for the hilly dales, and I think the wheezy A40's puny 1200 engine was found to be too gutless, whereas the Beemer would fit the bill as a characterful and very lively replacement.
Once the cuddly little Austin was back at the ranch, along with close relatives the A40 Farina and A30, I made a start on diagnosing her woes.

Austin was in severe difficulties by 1921 and the situation was not helped by the introduction of the Horsepower Tax in that year.
Austin was so keen to continue with the small car that he threatened to sell the concept to the Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine Company, where he was still chairman.
In 1952 an agreement was reached with Metropolitan and the American styled Austin Metropolitan (sometimes known as a Nash or a Rambler) was produced using the A40 engine and A30 suspension in either an open or closed body shell.

It replaced the A40 Devon and was quite similar to that body-on-frame car, including using the same 1.2 L straight-4 pushrod engine.
The Somerset was initially only a 4-door saloon, though a 3-passenger 2-door convertible model was also sold.
Over 173,000 copies were sold before the Somerset was replaced by the A40 Cambridge in 1954.

 Austin A40 Cambridge
When it arrived, the A40 Cambridge was the third-generation Austin A40, and the first to have been designed under the umbrella of the BMC organization.
Compared with the superseded A40 Somerset it was new from stem to stem, and there was neither a family likeness, nor many significant carry-over mechanical components.
Although the A40 Cambridge sold well enough, it was overshadowed by the success of the larger-engined A50 version, and when the time came to restyle the shell for early 1957, the A40 itself was discontinued.

The A40 Dorset was a 4 door saloon, and the Devon was the 2 door equivalent.
Austin A60 Vans and Pickups were made for many years until the dawn of the Morris Marina Van and Pickups in about 1973, but these use the pre-Pininfarina body of the Austin A50 circa 1955 (depicted in the picture here).
In about 1963 the Austin A40 was facelifted (with full width grille bars) and given the 1098cc engine at the same time as the Morris Minor.

This was a good thing because somewhere hidden away at the end of the Hindes shed is a sad and incomplete Austin A40 Tourer, the Devon was bought as a source of spare parts.

In 1952 Austin launched a facelift A40 to replace the ageing Devon which first appeared in 1947, the new car was named the A40 Somerset, carrying on with the "home counties" name theme.
The new Somerset was really little more than a restyled Devon, albeit with slightly more power coming from the same A40 1200cc engine.
Inside the Somerset had a steering column change, front bench seat and an umbrella handbrake lever, all adding to the American theme.

The reason why Austin had been chosen as a partner is that at the time no other company exported more cars to the US market.
The agreement stipulated that (1) annually 2,000 units of the A40 would be imported and assembled; (2) the components would be increasingly sourced from within Japan; and (3) Austin would provide all necessary technical support both for the assembly and for the shift toward domestic production.
On April 4, the first vehicle came off the line at the Tsurumi Austin factory and on May 8, a commemorative launch event was held in the city, with guests including the Trade and Industry Minister and the UK Ambassador.

 1953 AUSTIN A40 SOMERSET
In effect it was a re-bodied Devon, with slightly transatlantic bulbous styling based on that of the existing larger A70 Hereford and smaller A30, together with improvements in interior space and driveability.
In comparison to other 1:43 models, the Lansdowne Somerset saloon looked rather large, in fact it was closer to 1:41, but it was an excellent miniature in most other respects.
Body coloured inserts in the plated wheels (that were a fraction small in relation to the models size) gave the effect of having plated rim embellishers fitted, while the plated hub caps had the Austin wing design in their depressed centre.

 My A40 Somerset Story   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
My father was bought this Austin A40 Somerset in August 1989.
Apearing complete concerning the glasses and mechanics, wich was important at the time, once it was dificult to get components for replacement in Portugal for this model, and internet communnication don't exist at time, the car was left in bad conditions by is last owner.
So at the end of 6 months of work, the Austin A40 Somerset was on the road again, like new, making us proud for finished this unfinished project in 1989-1990.

 Austin A40 Somerset - GB Classic Cars
The Austin A40 Somerset was launched in 1951 and had a short production run of just two years.
It was similar in appearance to the smaller A30 saloon car, but was built on a separate chassis unlike the A30 which was Austin's first unitary construction car.

The A40 Cambridge replaced the separate chassis A40 Somerset, which had been based on the 1947 A40 Devon, this new A40 model made good use of modern monocoque chassis technology.
The A40's styling was very modern for 1954 and featured an overall square body design, complete with a full width grille that did not resemble the old traditional Austin design, although the old "flying A" mascot still adorned the bonnet.
The 1200cc A40 Cambridge failed to sell in large quantities, mainly because it seemed under-powered compared to its 1489cc, A50 sister car.
