Austin Motor Company - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Austin Motor Company was British manufacturer of automobiles that rose to be a major motorcar brand, the dominant partner after merger with Morris in the 50's but declining after absorption into British Leyland.
Herbert Austin, later Sir Herbert, the former manager of the Wolseley Tool and Motor Car Company founded The Austin Motor Company in 1905, at Longbridge, which was then in Worcestershire (Longbridge became part of Birmingham in 1911 when its boundaries were expanded).
Austin's historic assembly plant in Longbridge was, until its collapse in April 2005, MG Rover's only remaining plant.

Austin was in severe difficulties by 1921 and the situation was not helped by the introduction of the Horsepower Tax in that year.
Austin was so keen to continue with the small car that he threatened to sell the concept to the Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine Company, where he was still chairman.
In 1952 an agreement was reached with Metropolitan and the American styled Austin Metropolitan (sometimes known as a Nash or a Rambler) was produced using the A40 engine and A30 suspension in either an open or closed body shell.

AUSTIN WORKS - Britain To The Cape
The only mechanical hitch was when the Austin's speedometer packed up in the early stages of the Sahara crossing, after the cable had been carried away by a projecting outcrop of rock.
They were given a great reception in Cape Town where, to everyone's amazement, they appeared to be quite fresh despite their long and strenuous trip during which their schedule had exceeded 450 miles each day through the barren wastes of the Sahara desert and, later, the rain-soaked, rutted tracks of East Africa.
Austin launched the A70 Hampshire in 1948, its first all new, large post-war saloon car.

Austin was founded in 1905 by Herbert Austin.
The A70 Hereford came along with all hydraulic brakes, a convertable and a "Woody" wagon.
The A30 was Austin's answer to the Morris Minor, it actually eventually shared the mechanicals with Morris.

Austin's first new post-war cars, the dumpy A40 Dorset and Devon, appeared in 1947, followed by the bigger A70 Hampshire, the A40 Somerset, A70 Hereford and designed-for-export A90 Atlantic, whose chrome excesses almost completely failed to attract the American buyers it was aimed at.
The car with the most impact on the average British motorist, however, was the fourth-generation 'baby' Austin Seven, called the A30 and launched in late 1951.
Pre-dating the 1952 merging of Austin and Morris into the BMC (British Motor Corporation), it was the first unitary-bodied Austin and started off with an 803cc engine, the all-new overhead-valve A-Series unit, which was later fitted into the Morris Minor - ironic, since the A30 was originally intended as a Minor rival.
