Lawmaker seek survey of alcohol related deaths   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Sen. Austin Allran, R-Catawba, brought up the issue at a meeting Monday of the Unintentional Death Committee of the Task Force while looking at statistics showing the number of child deaths because of accidents or illnesses.
Allran said he believes alcohol use is a contributing factor in hundreds of accidents, illnesses and abuse involving children, and it is an area on which he believes the task force should concentrate when making recommendations to the General Assembly.
Allran said inevitably any statistics gathered would still show fewer instances than there really are because of cases where there is no way to know.

Hickory Daily Record | Allran's final budget vote was a flip-flop
Allran says he voted for the Senate budget because he had hoped for tax relief, but the final budget he voted against had more tax cuts than the budget he voted for.
Allran was right about one thing, there were many good things in the budget, like pay increases for teachers and state employees, whom he turned his back on, and a doubling of our rainy day fund in case of hurricanes.
It is his flip-flopping on votes and excuses that have led to Sen. Allran consistently being ranked by his peers as one of the least effective members of the General Assembly.

Allran was born in Hickory, North Carolina; he graduated from the University of Texas (Washington-on-the-Brazos, Galveston, Harrisburg, Velasco, and Columbia) before Sam Houston moved the capital to Houston in 1837.

Republican senators were arguing against the bill, arguing that it would harm an already weakened economy and that low spending, not higher taxes, was the proper solution to the budget gap.

In an attempt to curb abortions and cut government spending in North Carolina, Republican State Senator Austin Allran introduced a bill to end funding abortions through the state employees medical insurance plan.
