 Berkeley Parents Network: Moving to Austin
Austin is unique in that it is full of Texans with down-home friendly attitute, yet is has the high-tech influx which have many Californians flocking to Austin.
If, however, you drive 2 hours from Austin, you will find gas stations that do not allow people of color to use their bathrooms (or at least that was true back in the early 90s), which I found quite disheartening and scary.
Austin still retains some of it's charm from when I was a kid.

 Matthew M. Lyon Prize in Photography - Biography
He came to UC Berkeley in January 1999 to lead the Office of Public Affairs, overseeing media and government relations, university print and online communications, and programs for parents and visitors.
At Berkeley he rejoined Chancellor Robert Berdahl — at Berdahl’s previous post, president of the University of Texas at Austin, Lyon was his speechwriter and later a key figure in that campus's public affairs.
He was an avid fan of UC Berkeley’s men’s basketball team — he had accompanied the team to an away game in Seattle on Feb. 16, 2002, when he collapsed while working out with his friend, Cal Coach Ben Braun, and died.

Austin Burt received his PhD in Biology at McGill University in Montreal in September of 1990.
Austin came to the Taylor lab in January of 1993 to continue his research.
On April 1, 1995 (no fooling!) Austin left Berkeley and joined the faculty of the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine in London, England as an Assistant Professor (Lecturer).

UC Berkeley ranked second among the nation's colleges in the number of entering National Merit scholars last year according to the 1999-2000 annual report of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
The Berkeley National Merit Scholarship minimum is $500 and may increase to a maximum of $2,000 for students with substantial financial need.
The Berkeley campus had a total of 700 new or returning National Merit scholars on campus for the 2000-2001 academic year.

Berkeley and UT‑Austin are both members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (“NCAA”), which prescribes rules for determining the eligibility of student athletes to engage in competition.
After Yeo had sat out those events and a fourth one, UT‑Austin allowed her to rejoin the swim team, but Berkeley again complained, arguing that the added events could not be used to satisfy the one-year restriction.
NCAA staff agreed and on March 6 issued a decision that Yeo not participate in the next three regularly scheduled events, including the 2002 NCAA women=s swimming and diving championship on March 22.

In a recent study, a cost-competitive reflective roof membrane reduced the average summertime daily maximum roof-surface temperature of a retail store in Austin, Texas, from 168°F (76°C) to 126°F (52°C).
The total air-conditioning energy use was thereby reduced by 11% and peak air-conditioning demand fell by 14%.
In this study, sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the Heat Island Group at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory measured and analyzed summertime air-conditioning energy savings and power-demand reduction of a large retail store in Austin, Texas, that was retrofitted with a reflective roof membrane.

According to a city staff presentation delivered to the Austin Neighborhoods Council June 22, the three consulting teams contending for the job of rewriting the code are the Austin/Berkeley team of Jim Duncan Associates/Calthorpe; Denver-based Clarion Associates; and the Miami/Austin team of Duany Plater-Zyberk/Gateway Planning.
The Duncan/Calthorpe group reportedly has a leg up because of its specific experience in code revision, but council is expected to ask for presentations from all three teams before making a selection.
The city plans to incorporate and make consistent incremental changes that have occurred over the years, as well as responding to current initiatives like the commercial design standards, transit-oriented development, and broader goals like those developed through the Envision Central Texas process.

Librarians at Stanford University, the University of California-Berkeley and the University of Texas at Austin have signed an initiative and agreement to foster regional cooperation in the areas of collections, services and digital projects.
Harold Billings, director of general libraries at the University of Texas at Austin, said he was "particularly excited to see this as the first thrust toward a broader initiative among our libraries that includes other area studies programs that our institutions share in common."
Lyman said the agreement will allow Berkeley's Bancroft Library to focus its collecting "on those areas of Mexico in which it is already strong, while maintaining access to other areas of Latin American literature through the complementary collecting efforts of our partner institutions."
