Encouraged by Austin's burgeoning live music scene in the early 1970s, Bill Arhos, an instructor in The University of Texas's Radio/TV/Film department from 1965-1970, wrote the proposal to PBS to fund the pilot of the popular TV series.
The indoor set shows the skyline of Austin cut out of cardboard, various plants, and three tables placed in front of the stage where executive and associate producers of the program are hastily writing and answering urgent calls on their cell phones.
Hernandez, an Austin City Limits veteran, patiently waits in line for his daughter and two of her friends who have flown in from Louisiana to see the show.

"AUSTIN CITY LIMITS." "Austin City Limits," a television program of concert performances featuring uniquely American styles of music, was founded in 1974 by Public Broadcasting Service affiliate KLRN-TV (later KLRU-TV) in Austin, Texas, and was carried by 280 stations nationwide in 1990.
Despite technical glitches and limited audiences, the 1976 season defined the show's unique "progressive country" style, a combination of traditional country music with folk and rock influences that flourished in Austin at that time.
By its nineteenth network season (1993), "Austin City Limits" was focusing less on mainstream country music and more on songwriters and the "new folk movement," and had introduced a variety of new formats to supplement its traditional stage-show settings.

People always complain that their favorite artists aren't on the ACL Fest DVDs, but this set has a great selection of songs and artists.
My only complaint is that the DVDs don't capture the essence of ACL Fest other than a few time-captures and interviews on the second set.
Perhaps the producers wanted to hide all evidence of the incredible heat this past year (108 in the shade) and the dust storm.
