Austin Maestro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Austin Maestro is a mid-sized 5-door hatchback car that was produced by the Austin Rover subsidiary of British Leyland (BL), and its successors, from 1983 until 1994.
Following BL's sale to British Aerospace in 1986 Austin badges were dropped in 1987 for the '88 model year, and the range was sustained by a noisy but economical diesel engine launched the preceding year.
The Maestro was replaced by the Rover 200, which used the same rear suspension as the Maestro, although the rest of the floorpan and the front suspension were based on the previous model.

Austin Rover Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Austin Rover Group (ARG) was formed in 1981 as the mass-market car manufacturing subsidiary of British Leyland (BL).
Following the renaming of its parent company, BL, in 1986 to the Rover Group, and the subsequent sell-off of its truck and bus businesses, and takeover in 1988 by British Aerospace, and then in 1995 by BMW, ARG was eventually sold back into private ownership and became MG Rover.
Alvis was purchased from British Leyland by United Scientific Holdings plc in 1981, in 2002 Alvis merged with part of Vickers Defence Systems to form Alvis Vickers which was purchased by BAE Systems in 2004.

 The Story of the Maestro
Where the styling of Maestro had perhaps not worked out as well as it might, the simple engineering of the cars was always a strong point and resulted in a vehicle that was generally very pleasant to drive.
The end for the MG Maestro came in 1992, but by that time plans were already underway for the continuation of the marque's revival in the form of the super quick MGR V8 and the MGF.
On the Maestro front all was quiet for a further three years, until in the late 1990s the Maestro experienced a brief renaissance.

The Maestro, project LC10, was styled by BL's ace design guru David Bache, and was a departure from previous front-wheel drive cars from the company in that it dispensed with the famous Issigonis transmission-in-sump powertrain that had been pioneered in the Mini.
Austin badges were dropped in 1988, and the range was sustained by a noisy but economical diesel launched the preceding year.
The Maestro was replaced by the Rover 200, which from R3 model launched in 1995 used the same rear suspension as the Maestro, although the rest of the floorpan and front suspension was based on the previous Rover 200/Honda R8 model.

The Maestro was produced as the successor to the Allegro, and shared many of it's innovative features, like being ugly and unpleasant to drive.
My Maestro was a 1598cc automatic in metallic blue of 1988 vintage, and came free courtesy of Lisa, who had rejected it after it had started to show signs of unreliability.
I became expert at starting the engine standing outside the car, with one hand on the ignition key and the other hand on the carb, lifting the dashpot, then running around under the bonnet to blip the throttle and screw the dashpot back in without stalling (learned from the AA man).

Austin Maestro born again - in China - 4Car News from Channel 4
The Rover Group worked to set up Maestro assembly in Bulgaria after the car went out of production in the UK, but the project foundered - the Bulgarians were reportedly near-impossible to work with - and the tooling was sold on to a Chinese company called Etsong, which produced both the hatchback and the van.
FAW has the tooling for the Maestro, as well as its sister the Montego and the van, which is how the company has come to produce this hybrid, the longer (slightly) sleeker nose of the Montego having been grafted onto the Maestro's five-door hatchback body.
All of which means that the alleged 'last Maestro' sold at last Sunday's British Motor Industry Heritage Trust auction for £7475 is not the last Maestro at all.

Some Maestros were "built" CKD (complete knock down) for export and re-assembly in Romania or maybe Bulgaria, but not paid for so were eventually built up in the UK many years later.
Maestro's only fault was that it was by British Leyland and how the brits love to knock their own.

The Austin Motor Company was founded by the late Lord Austin (then Mr Herbert Austin) in 1905 with a capital of £15,000.
Austin was not new to motor manufacture for he had previously been with the Wolseley Company and had designed his first car - a 3 wheeler - in 1895.
In the intervening years it has produced some famous motor cars, notably the Austin Seven, which introduced a new standard of small car motoring for the family man. Today the company is controlled by one of the most dynamic figures in British industry, Mr L.P. Lord.

Nevertheless, there were many appealing aspects to the package: the accomodation, like all Maestros was generous and airy, the seats were exceptionally comfortable and performance was on the rapid side of acceptable.
From under-achiever to class leader in one fell swoop: the MG Maestro EFi was transformed by the addition of the injected version of the O-Series engine and Honda PG-1 gearbox.
Like the Maestro EFi, the MG Montego was an effective car, but sadly underrated by the buying public, who by 1984 were smitten by the Cavalier SRis - and that is a shame, because the MG Montego was a superior car to its GM rival in many ways.

 Car-derived vans/pick-ups
For many years, the small and medium-sized Austin and Morris vans produced by BMC were almost as familar a sight on British roads as the cars on which they were based.
As with the larger Maestro, a pick-up was not part of the standard range, although a few specialist conversions were offered, such as the Metro Mover.
Logic may have suggested that the Austin A55 pick-up would be superceded by a Farina-style model, but in the world of commercial vehicles, there was often little incentive to replace a tried and tested model purely for cosmetic considerations.
