Austin Allegro - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Austin Allegro was a model of car manufactured by British Leyland under the Austin name from 1973 to 1982.
This was because of internal company politics; it had been decided that the Austin Maxi should have a hatchback as its unique selling point and that no other car was allowed one.
The 1750cc E-Series engine lifted from the Austin Maxi was prone to cylinder head gasket failure, and its five speed transmission had an truly awful gearchange linkage (a problem which also plagued the Maxi itself).

Austin Maxi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Maxi was a hatchback automobile from BMC in the 1970s, designed by Alec Issigonis (later Sir) (1906-1988).
Underneath the Maxi's practical and spacious bodyshell lay an all-new front wheel drive chassis which was interlinked with an innovative five-speed manual transmission.
Its replacement, the Austin Maestro, which also replaced the smaller Allegro, was introduced in the spring of 1983.

Austin was in severe difficulties by 1921 and the situation was not helped by the introduction of the Horsepower Tax in that year.

In 1952 an agreement was reached with Metropolitan and the American styled Austin Metropolitan (sometimes known as a Nash or a Rambler) was produced using the A40 engine and A30 suspension in either an open or closed body shell.

Maxi development story   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Stokes agonized over the issue of whether the Maxi should be launched at all, but in the end he decided that there was no option at all really; the car had to be launched because of all the investment that had been ploughed in to the new Cofton Hackett engine facility.
Stokes in his heart of hearts knew that the Maxi was simply not good enough and his strategists were telling him so: their projections were that the Maxi would at best take a 4 per cent share of the UK Market.
By the end of its first year on the market, the Maxi was being produced at a rate of 400 per week; a far cry from the 6000 originally envisaged and because of its undoubted failure and the new management's disapproval of the car, the planned lower-priced down-spec four-door saloon version was dropped.

The Maxi was introduced with a brand new 1498 cc single overhead camshaft 74 bhp engine but this proved unpopular, and it was rapidly enlarged to 1748 cc to increase the power output to 84 bhp.
The Maxi 1750 is not a car which accelerates very rapidly, as it reaches 60 mph in 15.6 seconds and 70 in 21.7 seconds.
The Maxi originally used a cable-operated gear change system, but with the 1750 model this was changed to a rod operation.

Austin Maxi 1500 - Practical Classics   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Launched in 1969 the new Maxi promised to be a comfortable family car with a unique and practical body design, unfortunately the Maxi suffered from the usual Leyland build and image problems.
The Maxi body was similar in style to the old 1800 models but now included the useful addition of an opening rear hatch, the first of a whole new generation of medium sized family cars.
The Maxi sold in steady numbers throughout its life, early 1500 versions suffered with poor gear change linkages and were dropped from the range after 1979.

 Those Doors gallery
When the ADO17 was launched as the Austin 1800 in 1964, few people can have imagined that one of its defining features – its doors – would later appear on a series of cars ranging from a 1.5-litre family hatchback to a 3-litre executive saloon.
This alternative design proposal for the Maxi, dating from 1967, marks the first point at which BMC considered using those doors for its new 1500cc car.
The Maxi was originally developed in both four- and five-door forms, but only the five-door model was launched.

The `Big Farina' was available in three marques, the Austin, the Wolseley and later as the Vanden Plas Princes 3L (and later 4L with a Rolls Royce 4L Engine), all variations on the same basic shell.
There were only two new Wolseley models introduced in the early part of the decade, the Wolseley Six replacement for the 18/85 - essentially the 2.2 OHC litre six from the Austin Maxi squeezed into the 18/85 shell, and the ephemeral Wolseley Wedge 18/22.

It never reached the sales targets Austin-Morris had hoped for and the Austin Ambassador bowed out quietly early in 1984, replaced by the rather conventional Austin Montego range.

With the Austin Maxi about to gasp its last breath it was hoped that the Ambassador would increase its market share with its newfound versatility.
