The Austin Montego is an automobile produced by the Austin Rover Group (formerly British Leyland), from 1984 to 1994.
The Montego only differed in its frontal styling, and the obvious fact that it was a 4-door sedan.
Montegos continued to be built in small numbers in kit form at the Cowley plant until 1994, when production finally ended.

The Austin Maestro is a mid-sized hatchback automobile produced by the Austin Rover Group company in the early 1980s.
Austin badges were dropped in 1988, and the range was sustained by a noisy but economical diesel launched the preceding year.
The Maestro was replaced by the Rover 200, which from R3 model launched in 1995 used the same rear suspension as the Maestro, although the rest of the floorpan and front suspension was based on the previous Rover 200/Honda R8 model.

The MG Montego is a real "wolf in sheep's clothing" and can be seriously quick when it needs to be.
I once had it up to 130mph (according to the speedo anyway!) on a stretch of private road just to see what it was capable of and it was great fun leaving other boy racers in their cool looking XR3i's and Escort Cabrio's in "a cloud of rust".
My third Montego had exactly the same engine as the MG only it had power assisted steering and ran on unleaded fuel.

My interest in the Allegro was resurrected a few years ago when I purchased a 1981 Allegro estate as a 'run-about' to commute to and from work and carry the odd bale of hay for my sons pet animals.
My first car was an Austin 1100 four-door which I obtained from my mother when she bought a new Allegro.
This was an Austin Montego Estate in Cashmere Gold and was a company car.

Nothing major mechanically in the time I have had it, other than, when under warranty, the fuel pump seized, but it was repaired by the garage.
The smaller things which have been a problem have just been wear and tear things like the interior, the seats have become untidy in appearance and the stitching on seats has come away.

I have recently been in touch with a gentlemen in Southend who is looking to sell a 1986 Austin Montego 1.6HL in silver leaf.
The vehicle is in exceptional condition and is the only one in this lovely colour that I have seen for years.

 1989 Rover - Austin Montego MG comments
These cars do not deserve the reputation they have, although I have to admit, the rust resistance seems variable from one car to another.
The MG Montego I have will go off the clock.
Strange how some Montego's rust badly and some not at all, I've had three all MG's one was a real rust bucket and no matter what I did it just rusted more and more, whereas the other two remaianed virtually rust free throughout their useful lives.
