  Palmer
Palmer fell under the spell of the bounding stags, graceful birds, and other involved flourishes that were the pride of the master penman.
Palmer's success with large classes of students in business colleges had by this time convinced him of the fact that anyone could learn to write a free, tireless hand with his new method.
Palmer refers to one principle that was responsible for a large part of the success of his plan for teaching handwriting.

Many educators say the traditional cursive developed by Austin Norman Palmer — the standard form of handwriting nationwide for much of the 1900s — is on its way out.
So many students have trouble with the loopy, sharply slanted Palmer Method that teachers are increasingly adopting a simpler style known as Italic or "print cursive." Italic is a modification of another print-like script, D'Nealian.
Principal Suzanne Michelony, a left-hander who struggled with the Palmer Method as a Catholic schoolgirl, says modern scripts are easier to learn — particularly for left-handers, boys and young keyboarders, whose small-motor skills aren't suited toward fancy fonts.

The Monthly – Feature June: Character Building
For generations, handwriting was associated with the process of personal character formation, which was to be achieved by using the will to master the body (which was, according to Thornton, defined as a specifically masculine process).
That changed in the 1880s, when Austin Norman Palmer developed the script that we all learned in school.
Palmer promoted his lettering as "modern writing," whose plain and rapid style was better suited to "the rush of business." By the 1890s it had replaced the more flourished and decorative Spencerian lettering.

echo - August 2002 - A Sign of the Times
One historian has even suggested that the rejection of its rather feminine appearance mirrored a general anxiety over increasing numbers of women entering the workplace.
In any event, Austin Norman Palmer, a penmanship instructor in New England, introduced a simpler handwriting style that could be executed neatly but rapidly, almost robotically, in keeping with the pace of modern business.
The introduction of the typewriter only highlighted this growing homogenization of the workplace and helped create a backlash against the notion of handwriting as a mere imitation of ideal forms.
