Austin Pendleton pulled this off early in this commentator's childhood when he starred in what is still one of his biggest hits: The Muppet Movie.
It's the best role an actor like Pendleton can hope for, though: wussy, to be sure, but ultimately redeemed by his generosity of spirit toward a band of felt puppets.

Austin grew up watching play rehearsals and full performances in the family living room until the group eventually found a building to use.
It was a flop, but Pendleton worked on the play off and on for the next 30 years with a variety of composers, rewrites, workshops and occasional performances.
Addendum (June 2001): Since this article was published, Austin Pendleton has continued his tradition of playing classic roles off-Broadway with his performance as the title character in Shakespeare’s Richard II for the Frog and Peach theatre during the spring of 2001.

For over the past 30 years, the diminutive, stage-trained character actor, Austin Pendleton has been cast in film and TV roles that, in an earlier generation, might have been filled by such hand-wringing nervous Nellies as Edward Everett Horton or Franklin Pangborn.
Pendleton worked steadily onstage, mostly in New York and New Haven, though he spent the 1966-67 seasons with San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater.
On the East Coast, Pendleton appeared in "Fiddler on the Roof" (1964) as Motel, the tailor, played Leo in "The Little Foxes" (1967), appeared in the title role of "The Last Sweet Days of Isaac" (1970-72) and twice played "Tartuffe" (in 1974 and 1977).

Directed by Austin Pendleton, Terrence McNally’s “Sweet Eros,” explores dependency and love from the perspective of an alienated young man. More explicitly, ‘the young man,’ the lead character (played by King) abducts ‘the girl’ (Veronica Bero) and is keeping her captive in his house in the country.
Pendleton said McNally’s plays are often about ordinary people trying to find ways to reach out to others.
Pendleton and King have rehearsed it on and off over the last year and said they could put it on with only a few weeks notice.
