 Music: Kelly Willis
Willis, of course, wasn't as surprised by the what as she was by the when and how; she says the fact that Tony Brown didn't give the news himself came as the ultimate blow.
Willis says that because her first three albums were so slick, she envisioned "$2,000 analog-recorded, raw-sounding demos." Lovett agreed and wound up taking her to a large, expensive digital studio in Los Angeles anyway.
Willis readily admits she had no idea who Son Volt or Uncle Tupelo were at the time, but she agreed to record with Farrar for a Red Hot and Bothered compilation that ultimately led to demos on which Willis was backed by both Son Volt and Sixteen Horsepower.

Kristi Willis is a Democratic consultant in Austin who worked for the congressman in his re-election campaigns and in his district office in Austin from late 1998 to 2004, said James Cousar, campaign treasurer for Doggett.
For a decade, Willis was a friend to Doggett whom he and his wife “would have entrusted with anything we have,” Doggett said in a statement.
Willis also made at least $10,000 in unauthorized payments to herself in her position as treasurer for Capital Area Democratic Women, said Alicia Butler, president of the political action committee.

The Face of Texas Gallery - The Digital Journalist
Willis was singing at Austin's Continental Club in 1990 when Griffith wandered in and caught the end of her set.
Griffith was so impressed by the plaintive, sensual, country voice of the pretty young singer that she headed for the phone and dialed MCA producer Tony Brown.
But the singer, who's known among the local media as "the voice of Austin," seems determined, now, to concentrate on the basics: writing good songs, performing with musicians she admires, and maintaining artistic control of her career.

 No Depression: Back Issues
Willis co-wrote three of the EP's four songs (one each with Louris, Sixteen Horsepower and John Leventhal), the fourth coming from her husband, Bruce Robison.
Ensenat had given Willis a collection of Drake's music and recommended that she cover one of the songs, but the one Ensenat had in mind was one that "I just couldn't get around, I just couldn't get ahold of," Willis says.
Louris' pop influence clearly takes Willis down a different path than she ever would have been pushed to pursue in her MCA days, and her music is all the better for it — if still staunchly difficult to corner in a radio-driven marketplace.

It was here that Willis embarked on the what would be his most profound work in his later years -- interviewing and documenting the history of war from the men and women who lived through it.
