Amphibious transport dock - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An amphibious transport dock (also called a landing platform dock or LPD) is an amphibious assault ship, a warship that embarks, transports, and lands elements of a landing force for expeditionary warfare missions.
The United States Navy operates several of this type of ship; their helicopters, vertical take-off and landing aircraft, and air-cushion or conventional landing craft support of the United States Marine Corps's "vertical envelopment" assault doctrine.
Amphibious transport docks perform the mission of amphibious transports, amphibious cargo ships, and the older LPDs by incorporating both a flight deck and a well deck that can be ballasted and deballasted to support landing craft or amphibious vehicles.

The Amphibious Transport, Dock, is used to transport and land Marines, their equipment and supplies by embarked landing craft or amphibious vehicles augmented by helicopters in amphibious assault.
With a relatively shallow draft of 22 feet, she was able to steam within sight of the Al Faw peninsula to act as a refueling platform for the numerous aircraft transiting from the big decks located in deeper waters to the southeast.
Although their capabilities are less than those of the new LSD-41 class, the ships of the Austin class, built between 1965-1971, were considered sufficiently modern to have their service lives extended, and the Navy had planned to inaugurate an overhaul program for all 11 of them commencing in early 1988.

Landing Ship, Dock (LSD) / Amphibious Transport, Dock (LPD)
The term "dock" is somewhat confusing, since it might be imagined that these ships are intended to land at a dock, or transport to a dock.
This class could be identified from the earlier ships in that its ship had their main lifting cranes and smoke stacks offset from one side to the other.
The design of the Harpers Ferry (LSD 49)-class dock landing ship is similar to that of the LSD 41-class, with ships of both classes sharing the same general dimensions and propulsion plant.

 WHAT
Dock Landing Ships were developed during World War II as a means of transporting landing crafts (a large proportion of the hull of this type of craft is a floodable docking well), across the open seas and launching them in an assault on an enemy coast.
To facilitate the docking and loading of various sized landing craft, the ship can ballast down in the water, thereby flooding the well deck to enable the landing craft to enter or exit the well deck through the stern gate door.
However ships of this class have usually seen 4 decades and more of service in the USN and it would no doubt be extensively refitted for considerable life extension prior to the transfer.

The Future of the Navy's Amphibious and Maritime Prepositioning Forces
Austin class (LPD-4) amphibious transport docks are the oldest ships in the amphibious warfare force, with an average age of about 36.
Harpers Ferry LSDs are considered the cargo variant of dock landing ships: they have 10 times the cargo storage space of the Whidbey Island class but only half the carrying capacity for landing craft in their docking wells.
Arguably, sea bases might be at greater risk than land bases from ballistic and cruise missiles because they are more concentrated, meaning that a missile strike could disable or destroy a vastly greater proportion of material and capability for a military operation than would be the case with a land base.

Leading the Way in Ship Design
Larger and more capable than the LPD 4 Austin class, its immediate predecessor, the LPD 17 also is required to have many of the capabilities of the other three classes of ships that it is replacing--LKA 113-class amphibious cargo ships, LSD 36-class dock landing ships, and LST 1179-class tank landing ships.
The San Antonio class is designed to meet the needs of both men and women for more personal space, for dedicated educational and professional training facilities, and for enhanced physical-fitness facilities.
Looking at the 12-ship class as a whole and its planned 40-year service life, the overall impact of these early schedule adjustments is far offset by across-the-board improvements in platform performance--performance which would not have been achieved were it not for the dedicated, day-by-day efforts of the Navy-Marine Corps-industry team.

::IDSA Strategic Comments::The Indian Navy's Amphibious Leap: 'With A Little Help From America'::
Amphibious vessels are essentially 'Trojan (sea) Horses', carrying a large number of troops with equipment, vehicles and cargo (depending on the mission) to be discharged onto the shores of the 'objective area'.
In contrast, a LPD like the Trenton is a 'better Trojan Horse' - its carrying capacity is roughly double that of the LST-L and it has a greater endurance of 7,700 nautical miles at a speed of 20 knots, as opposed to the LST-L's 3,300 nm at 14 knots.
More importantly, it has a large platform to operate up to six medium-lift helicopters and a floodable 'well-deck' at its stern for housing smaller landing craft or hovercraft.
