AUSTIN FRIENDS OF TRADITIONAL MUSIC (AFTM) has been fostering and promoting all genres of traditional music in Austin since 1974 and is glad to be presenting its yearly FESTIVAL, which played to a packed house last year.

You have the factor, as well, that musician's aren't necessarily immune from cover charges (this depends on the club, the owner, the door person, the price of tea in China...) and as such have their own budgetary concerns that can prevent them from hearing their peers perform live.
Even further, a few musicians (by my guess, a minority) view their music as something that they have to work at -- to the point that they don't interact with other performers, preferring to concentrate on their own work.
Further, the "performing songwriters" (no one wants to be known as a "singer-songwriter" anymore, for reasons that mainly involve Gilbert O'Sullivan) generally perform under their own names, and so even if the backup musicians are a changing cast, it doesn't mean as much in terms of name recognition.

The musical variety was an incredible hodge-podge of styles that mimicked what was heard on the Top Forty radio stations of the day.
Of note were the many clubs on Austin's "east side", the real "home of the blues." The IL Club, Victory Grill, and Charlie's Playhouse (where the Jet's held forth) all provided woodshedding opportunities for musicians from the west side.
Austin provided The Fabulous Chevelles, the Wig, Baby Cakes, New Atlantis, Strawberry Shoemaker, Leo and the Prophets, Conqueroo, The Mustangs, Cavaliers, The Rhythm Kings and Lavender Hill Express.

To this I would add a reason that's hinted at but not mentioned explicitly: Musicians used to be able to pay the rent with a part-time job and devote a lot more time to practicing and performing.

The Florida Razors were formed in 1981 and helped define the Hamilton club scene along with The Shakers and The Trouble Boys shuffling between ‘50’s Rock’n’Roll, country, punk and pop influences.
They then pressed a novelty EP entitled 'Half A Rock’n’Roll Record' (one side of the vinyl was etched with 'More Or Less' written in it by hand).
The best of the group's output, 'Beat Music: The Essential Collection', was released in August 2000 on Bullseye Records.
