Defence review threatens Australia's clout - Hugh White - Opinion
In the big defence debate, one thing is settled.
Australia should not and need not choose between building our military to defend the continent, or secure our neighbourhood, and sending forces to uphold our interests in distant places such as Iraq.
This is consistent with the army's ambition to be Australia's primary strategic instrument, and with the Government's decisions to spend huge sums on air warfare destroyers and big amphibious ships, and less on new strike fighters.

Australia should look to renewable resources and clean coal technology for its future energy needs, not nuclear power, Labor leader Kim Beazley says.

John Quiggin » Blog Archive » General Glut and Australia’s CAD
General Glut turns his attention to Australia’s current account deficit, a topic that’s also being debated in a number of threads over at Stephen Kirchner’s blog.
The ideal case for a current account deficit is one where we are attracting foreign debt or equity capital for new direct investments in the tradeable goods sector, which will, in due case, generate exports that will permit repayment of the capital invested without any requirement for adjustment elsewhere in the economy.
Razor, it would be perfectly reasonable to aggregate Australia and NZ since the two economies are highly integrated, and similar in most respects.
