Australia willingly participated in World War I; the defeat of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) at Gallipoli is often regarded as the birth of the nation: the first major military action that the Commonwealth of Australia participated in.
Australia's links to its British past are increasingly tenuous and since the election of the Whitlam Government in 1972 there has been an increasing focus by many Australian governments on the nation's future as a part of the Asia-Pacific region.
The Commonwealth of Australia is a constitutional monarchy: Queen Elizabeth II is the Queen of Australia, a role distinct and separate from her position as Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom.

NIRA Review Spring 1996: Single-Mother Families in Japan:A Conspicuous Silence by Ito Peng
In terms of educational achievement, economic and job status, and personal relationships, adult children of single parent families are also found to be less successful compared with their two-parent counterparts.
This increase is directly related to: 1) the increase in the divorce rate, particularly among couples with children; 2) the greater propensity for mothers to take the custody of their children upon divorce; and 3) the decline in the actual numbers of widowed single-mothes.
The media was quick to exploit the issue by focusing on the rise in the numbers of single-mother families due to divorce, to the tragic cases of family suicides carried out by desperate single fathers, and the deplorable situation of children of divorced and unmarried mothers crowding orphanages in Japan.
