Ballet-Dance Magazine - Australian Ballet - David McAllister - Interview by Ana Abad-Carles
McAllister studied at the School of the Australian Ballet, before joining the company founded in 1962 by Dame Peggy van Praagh, who was “a wonderful teacher, a wonderful coach and […] a visionary woman when it came to choreography and developing new choreographers”, in 1983.
However, ballet has survived because we speak to an audience on an emotional level, and I think that is the way in which it can continue to be relevant.
And to have the Australian Ballet as it was certainly in the seventies, eighties and early nineties: an internationally recognised ballet company.

I was impressed with how well the Australian Ballet dancers were able to shed the rigidity inherent in classical training and free up the use of their bodies.
The Australian Ballet deserves a good deal of credit for providing the opportunity for a new generation of choreographers to enter what is a rather exclusive world.

She cited the fashion for the ‘six o’clock’ legs and the fact that once the audience’s eye develops a taste for the extremes of physical aptitude, it is hard to modify that.
The debate that followed concentrated on the ‘ballerina’ on the basis that it is generally in ballet that the dancer’s body is required to conform to a particular size and shape, and that is much more prevalent for the female than male ballet dancer.
The Royal Ballet physiotherapist explained that a dancer with what would generally be perceived as a physical weakness and therefore bar to success, can, with hard work, improve and compensate for those weaknesses and become an outstanding dancer.

SYDNEY -- Arriving at the Sydney Opera House for the local premiere of Graeme Murphy's "Swan Lake" Friday, one was confronted with a large ice sculpture of a swan at the base of the staircase leading from the box office foyer to the southern foyer of the Opera Theatre.
The Australian Ballet's Inaugural production on November 2 1962 was Peggy van Praagh's rather unimaginative staging of the evening-length Petipa-Ivanov "Swan Lake." The last production in the Australian Ballet's repertoire was Anne Woolliams's version, with a heart-rending pas de deux choreographed for Act IV.
The Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra under the baton of Principal Conductor Mark Summerbell gave a satisfyingly dramatic and clear performance of Tchaikovsky's score, and one which supported the dancers.
