The ABC originally controlled 12 stations around the country: 2FC and 2BL in Sydney, 3AR and 3LO in Melbourne, 4QG in Brisbane, 5CL in Adelaide, 6WF in Perth, 7ZL in Hobart and the relay stations 2NC in Newcastle, 2CO at Corowa, 4RK in Rockhampton and 5CK at Crystal Brook.
During the war, the ABC's news bulletins attained a reputation for authority and independence, and from 1942 onwards, were broadcast three times daily through all national and most commercial transmitters.
ABC Asia-Pacific - available by satellite and selected cable telvision services across Asia - Produced on contract to the Department of Foreign Affairs and subject of an intense contract renegiotation in 2005; due to change its name in the near future.

The Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) was founded under the Labor Scullin Government (October 1929 to 6 January 1932) which was committed to public control and operation of broadcasting.
The ABC excelled in ‘actuality’ broadcasts with reporters standing on the tops of cars, climbing trees or whatever was available to get the best vantage to describe anything from ANZAC Day marches to the London to Melbourne air race celebrating Melbourne’s centenary in 1942.
Australian news began to be promoted as the war in the Pacific became more significant and the ABC supplied commercial stations with material throughout the war.

After spending the previous 20 years as a government-funded radio broadcaster, the Australian Broadcasting Commission was given the job of establishing and running a national network of television stations in the early 1950s, first in Sydney and Melbourne and then into the rest of the country.
The ABC, a commission created by the government in 1932 to manage the national radio network, was appointed to set up and operate the national television network, and began land acquisition and studio construction from 1954.
The ABC held a staff competition to create an ABC logo in 1963, and in 1965 the ABC's Senior TV Graphics Designer Bill Kennard was awarded £25 for a three-loop wavelength design based on the patterns of an oscilloscope.

Thus, the ABC continued into the 1940s generally ignoring its own requirement that enlightenment must come through entertainment, so far as educational broadcasting was concerned, and failing, therefore, to demonstrate adequately the value of radio as an educational medium.
The terms 'instructional broadcasting' and 'broadcast instruction' have been adapted from the terms 'instructional television' and 'televised instruction' which were used by Professor Richard Handscombe in an interview with the writer at Glendon College, Toronto, on 27 May 1983.
