Government of Australia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
With this act, Australian law was made unequivocally sovereign, and the High Court of Australia was confirmed as the highest court of appeal.
Because the Australian Constitution dates from 1900, when the Dominions of the British Empire were not independent states in their own right, the term "head of state" is not used in the Australian Constitution.
Recognising this, the Australian Parliament in 1973 gave the Queen the title Queen of Australia, thus confirming her status as Australia's head of state.

In most governments, members of the cabinet are given the title of minister, and each hold a different portfolio of government duties ("Minister of the Environment", etc).
Historically, cabinets are the successors of Privy Councils.
The notion of the modern cabinet is credited to the reign of George I and George II; both of whom made use of such a system, as they weren't native speakers of the language in which they governed.

The citizens of the Australian Commonwealth are held in "sovereign suspension" between their historical roots and their present-day sociopolitical circumstances, unable to give true allegiance to a common national identity, and therefore seemingly ill-prepared to adequately define Australia's role within the international system.
Australian sovereignty is nonetheless derived from the British Crown.
The sovereignty of the Australian government is directly linked to the preservation of the monarchy, and though such a system may seem antiquated, it has nonetheless provided the Australian people with strong and stable governance throughout the country's history.

The War Cabinet and Advisory War Council
The inaugural meeting of the War Cabinet was held on 27 September 1939 at Victoria Barracks in Melbourne, in a room at the rear of the first floor of the northern wing, which had been completed in 1916 as an addition to the main building (A Block) on St Kilda Road.
It was agreed that the War Cabinet, which should include such Ministers as the Prime Minister should direct, together with such Ministers as from time to time were coopted, should deal with all matters in relation to the conduct of the war other than matters of major policy.
War Cabinet meetings were held at Victoria Barracks, Melbourne, and in the Cabinet room adjacent to the prime ministerial suite at Parliament House, Canberra.

Quoting declassified Australian cabinet documents, London's New Scientist magazine reported that the three allies detonated a 50-ton nuclear bomb at Iron Ridge in 1963 as part of a secret military experiment codenamed Operation Blowdown.
An Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service ranger, Mick Blackman, who is based near Iron Ridge, said records in his office showed that the test used conventional weapons to simulate the effects of a small nuclear explosion.
Australian journalists who examined the same cabinet papers on Monday said they made no mention of testing a nuclear weapon, but instead discussed a proposal by the United States to use Iron Ridge to test nerve gases.

Catholic World News : Australian cabinet split on abortion?
Sydney, Mar. 18, 2004 (CWNews.com) - An Australian cabinet minister has stressed that anti-abortion comments by a Catholic colleague were only "a personal statement," and would not affect government policy.
He made that statement after a fellow cabinet member, Tony Abbott, denounced "a Medicare system which funds 75,000 abortions a year." Abbott, a Catholic, had said that the prevalence of abortion indicates a serious moral problem in Australia.
Responding to those comments, Costello remarked that Abbott "is, as you know, a devoutly religious man." But he stressed that his colleague's public stand against abortion "wasn't a statement on behalf of the government." Costello indicated that he would prefer to avoid public debate on abortion.

Meanwhile the Australian Government continues its battle against illegal shark fishing off the country’s northern coastline with an announcement last week that two more Indonesian vessels with shark fins allegedly on board had been seized in less than 12 hours.
Senator Macdonald said Cabinet had agreed to an on-going, intensive campaign to protect Australia’s southern fisheries around Heard Island and McDonald Island, which would include the use of armed enforcement patrols, and an increase in frequency of patrols in the area.
The islands, 4,000 kilometres to the southwest of Australia, are the home of the valuable Patagonian toothfish, and the on-going survival and sustainability of the fishery was essential at both a commercial and environmental level, he said.

It would appear that there are already several caveats being thrown around, such as a 'staged implementation' over a number of years, no competition from SQ utilising their A380's *prior* to the QF delivery of their A380's and limitations on both initial capacities (no 'dumping' of excess capacity) and route restrictions.
AUSTRALIAN government ministers are expected to delay making a final decision on Singapore Airlines' demand for access to the lucrative US route, a newspaper reported today.
