In a speech to the Defence Women’s Network in December 1999, the Defence Secretary, Dr Allan Hawke, outlined Defence’s policies relating to the role of women in the ADF, including the issue of women in combat and the integration of women into the Submarine Squadron.
However, as recently reported surveys of six defence bases have confirmed, and as the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission’s recent ruling on damages to a former RAAF member demonstrates, women in the ADF are still subject to sexual harassment and sexual assault.
In 1996 Major Kathryn Quinn of the Australian Army Psychology Corps published a report, Sexual harassment in the Australian Defence Force, a comparative assessment of results from the 1987 and 1995 ADF career and family studies.

ADFA is located in the Australian capital city of Canberra, in the suburb of Campbell, near the Australian Government district of Russell.
The junior officers that attend the Australian Defence Force Academy hold the rank of Officer Cadet in the Australian Army (OCDT) and the Royal Australian Air Force (OFFCDT) and the rank Midshipman (MIDN) in the Royal Australian Navy.
ADFA is based on an amalgamation of all three services, and the organisation of the cadet side of the academy reflects this.
