The Australian Film Institute (AFI), established in 1958, is an organisation that promotes Australian film and television through the annual AFI Awards, a membership program and AFI film events throughout the year.
The Australian Film Institute was founded in 1958 as a non-profit organisation devoted to developing an active film culture in Australia and fostering engagement between the general public and the film industry.
As a producer of arguably the industry's most marked calendar date, the AFI plays a central role in the way in which the Australian film industry is known and understood, both locally and internationally, and is widely accepted as important to the definition and overall brand of Australian media.

A financial crisis within Australia's premier film culture body, the Australian Film Institute, has prompted the resignations of three board members and forced the organisation to severely cut back its operations.
Mr Lawrence said the report was requested by the Australian Film Commission and Film Victoria, which held off committing funding for this year's showcase AFI Awards gala until they were satisfied that the AFI had made moves to fix its finances.
The AFC had agreed to provide $200,000, but a decision was still awaited from Film Victoria, which usually contributes $500,000 to the event.

This year, just 10 Australian films have been made (a record low) and some of these weren’t even given a release here in Brisbane.
