The annual AFI Festival of Film is the screening of all feature films, documentaries, animations and short films entered and nominated in the AFI Awards each year.
It is Australia's only national Australian film festival, and is where everyone including AFI members can view and decide on the winners for that year's AFI Awards.

The awards sometimes have distinctive names (such as the Oscar for the Academy Awards), which are mentioned if applicable.
Many awards are simply identified by the name of the group presenting the award.
Awards have been divided into three major categories: critics' awards, voted on (usually annually) by a group of critics; festival awards, awards presented to the best film shown in a particular film festival; and industry awards, which are selected by professionals working in some branch of the movie industry.

The Australian Film Institute and the producer of the AFI Awards, Paul Dainty of Dainty Consolidated Entertainment, have announced the full plans for the AFI Awards season this year, which is now in full swing.
An AFI Award represents outstanding achievement in Australian film and television as voted by industry peers and members of the AFI.
Both Screenplay Awards were intended to be presented this year; the two categories will be merged purely as a result of the number and type of entries received, meaning that an independent Adapted Screenplay Award cannot reasonably be presented in 2007.
