The first Australian division to see action on the Western Front was the 5th Division which was thrown unprepared into the futile Battle of Fromelles, a "diversion" that cost the division 5,500 casualties for no gain.
The 1st Army's initial area of responsibility was the defence of Queensland and northern New South Wales.
Australian units were also responsible for the last phase of amphibious assaults during the Pacific War: the attacks on Japanese-occupied Borneo, including Tarakan, Brunei, British Borneo, Balikpapan and other targets in Sarawak.

This paper was first presented at a clinical meeting of the Second Anzac Medical Society held in France in October 1993.
Trench Fever is an unusual disease in that it was first discovered in 1915 and disappeared in 1918 when the war ended.
The first clinical description of Trench Fever was made by Major J. Graham in the Lancet of September 25th.
