In 1945 the tasks of variuos predecessor organisations (among them the German Navy's hydrographic service, the Wilhelmshaven maritime observatory, and the "Deutsche Seewarte" under Georg von Neumayer) were concentrated in the newly created "Deutsches Hydrographisches Institut" (DHI) in Hamburg.

This service meets Australia's obligations under a number of international conventions - in particular, The Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Among other things, Hydrographic MGI is used to determine freedom of manoeuvre for warships, submarines and commercial shipping in time of conflict, and can be combined with other Defence imagery and geospatial information for strategic, operational and tactical level planning and operations.
Currently, some 400 Australian nautical charts, covering one eighth of the world's water surface are available to mariners in both paper and electronic form, and additional resources are now being directed to increase the rate of chart production.

In Dec.1914 she was switched to patrolling in the Red Sea and in Oct.1915 was released from government service, refitted at Hong Kong and returned to the trans-Pacific service on 12th Feb.1916.
Because she was the only large coal burning transport left in service, and with the scarcity of good firemen and good steam coal, she was transferred to special duties.
Between 1939-45 she remained in commercial service under the Ministry of War Transport and was reconditioned on the Tyne in 1945 to 15,320 gross tons and with accommodation for 190-cabin class passengers.

Hill's service in this relief operation was acknowledged by the award of an OBE in 1937.
His service in the RNR was rewarded with the Reserve Decoration, and his standing as a skilled navigator and marine surveyor was recognised by Fellowships of the Royal Institute of Navigation and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.

The Excel spreadsheet containing the source data was downloaded from the Hydrographic Service website Data processing consisted of the following steps: (1) define records where dumping locations are defined as points, polygons and radii.
It was decided that, at the scales that the dumsites were to be displayed, that where the site was defined by a polygon or radius, a single polygon node, or radius centre point would be sufficient to display the dumpsite.
