The Block blitz knocked the wind out of Ten's Australian Idol, the audience of which fell to 1.13 million from 1.45 million a week earlier.
The result was never in doubt: before it went to air on Sunday night, television industry executives and media buyers were predicting that the final episode of The Block, Nine Network's hybrid reality TV-home renovation series, would be the most-watched program of 2003.
Sunday night's episode became the No.1 TV program of the year, a title previously held by the August 10 episode of The Block, with 2.6 million viewers.
