The standard of recordkeeping has been a recurring issue in Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) audits in Commonwealth organisations over recent years.
National Archives officers were also attached as technical advisers to the audit teams.
National Archives also supports the audit recommendations and commits to continuing to work closely with Commonwealth organisations to help them institute systems, policies and procedures which will ensure that full and accurate records of government decisions and activities are made and kept.

The Australian National Audit Office and ATO Internal Audit have a rolling programme of issues that are audited during the financial year.
The role of the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is to manage and shape taxation, excise and superannuation systems that fund services for Australians, giving effect to social and economic policy.
In 2000-01 the ATO entered into purchaser/provider arrangements with both the Department of Family and Community Services (FaCS) and the Department of Health and Aged Care which will see the ATO continuing to provide services to each of these departments to enable them to achieve their stated Outcomes in 2001-02.

The Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) concluded that the application of general better practice principles for performance management across APS agencies was quite variable.
Because of the nature of Australian Workplace Agreements (AWAs), staff on AWAs were far more likely to be eligible and to receive a bonus than staff on Certified Agreements (CAs), as well as receive significantly higher average payments.
The audit was undertaken in accordance with ANAO auditing standards at a cost to the ANAO of $390 000.

Returning to National Office in 1986, Carmody was appointed as Second Commissioner in charge of revenue collection and audit, and in the following year, leader of the ATO's "modernisation program".

The Howard Government is trying to make the notorious leasing of Labor's national head office, Centenary House in Barton, to the National Audit Office, a political liability but there's quite a debate going on about whether this really matters or not.
If Centenary House is left as a running sore for Labor, in a tight election, it could make all the difference- just as 1500 voters scattered around the country once did for Paul Keating.

MARK COLVIN: The Australian National Audit Office has slammed the Defence Department for dragging its feet over a decade-old order to upgrade the army's troop carriers.
NEIL JAMES: Troops from 5/7 RAR (Royal Australian Regiment), the army's only mechanised infantry battalion, had to actually borrow vehicles from the cavalry to go to Iraq, and they're working in Iraq only with LAVs (light armoured vehicles), because their own M-113 APCs just aren't capable of modern battle.
The Australian Defence Association says one result is that Australian soldiers in Iraq don't have the armour they should have had years ago.

The Government has long criticised the long-term rent contract for office space at ALP's headquarters Centenary House, leased by the Australian National Audit Office.
The 15-year deal includes a guaranteed rental increase of nine per cent a year, which now makes the office rental some of the most expensive office space in Australia.

In his meeting with the Northern Land Council yesterday Minister Ruddock asked that it make a greater effort to address the findings of the Australian National Audit Office performance audit which found that there was no evidence to indicate that the Land Councils were performing their functions in a effective and efficient manner.
Given the unresolved difficulties I would be loathed to allow Land Councils to get further access to funds from the Aboriginals Benefit Account.
'I am disappointed in the Northern Land Council failing to come to grips with this issue, and suggesting that I am blocking the distribution of funds,' Minister Ruddock said.
