The Australian Radio Network (ARN) is a network of commercial radio stations.
ARN run two main network streams: the Classic Hits network, which typically plays a range of songs from the 1960s to the 1980s, with limited newer music; and the MIX network, which is a softer, adult contemporary format.
Other ARN formats exist, such as a Hip Hop, Urban and RandB format on Katoomba-licenced The Edge 96.ONE, which serves most of western Sydney; and an easy listening format on Cruise 1323, formerly Classic Hits network member 5DN.

In the early 1980s, having an abundance of data from quarterly radio audience surveys, I analysed trends in the different age groups listening to an Australian radio network.
The network was called Radio 2, displaying a total lack of originality because (a) the title was copied from a vaguely similar BBC network, and (b) it would be difficult to imagine a more prosaic network description than "2".
As this network was on the AM band, and most young people preferred FM stations, few listeners were aged under 40, and the average age was about 55.

ARN chief executive officer, Bob Longwell, said ARN had been in negotiations with March for a “lengthy period of time” and described the securing of his services as a major coup given his extensive experience, skills and track record over a 25-year career in Australian commercial radio.

Although the withdrawal of licenses is extremely rare, the significant investment in individual licenses, talent and networks (we've for example noted the vicissitudes of Australian radio network owners who overpaid for assets during the 1980s radio boom) means that broadcasters tend to be cautious.
Australian industry codes are formally registered with the Australian Broadcasting Authority, now the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).
The first two forms have been favoured in wartime and by totalitarian regimes, with for example owners of radio receivers having to register each set (which would then be modified to prevent tuning to particular frequencies) and national broadcasters competing for the same part of the spectrum.
