Keim (1983) studied the securities traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) for the period of 1963 to 1979 and concluded that nearly 50 percent of these stocks exhibited high returns in the month of January.
The purpose of this paper is to find out whether the seasonal effect exists in all six sectors of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (KLSE) eventhough there are no taxes on capital gains in Malaysia.
Overall, initial observation showed that the average returns are higher in January compared to other months for 5 out of 6 sectors of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange.
