The commander of Australian forces in the Middle East said his troops had destroyed Iraqi positions near the southeastern port city of Umm Qasr and have engaged enemy forces in other locations, killing Iraqi soldiers and destroying military equipment.
Australian Special Forces were operating deep inside Iraq, McNarn said, and included a squadron from the Special Air Service (SAS) regiment, commandos, helicopters and an incident response team.
In other maritime operations, the Australian navy was working with the United States to clear the port of Umm Qasr in preparation for humanitarian aid shipments.

Professor Marginson said the ATN universities, which had relied heavily on the international student dollar, needed to reassess the market and what it was that made them attractive propositions to students.
He said that although it was difficult for ATN universities to have the research output of larger and more established universities, he could see no other way for them to become more attractive globally.

Defence Force chief General Peter Cosgrove unveiled a plan today to boost computer and communications networking across the military, saying the capability would be crucial to the wars of the 21st century.
He said the coalition allies in Iraq, including Australian, British and American forces, would be remembered in history as the first warriors to use what would become known as Network-Centric Warfare, or NCW.
The technology would also allow Australia's military to network with the military forces of close allies like the United States, as well as the seamless transfer of information between the army, navy and air force.
