		Nineteen of the top 25 federal electorates in terms of income voted yes, whereas 84 of the bottom 100 electorates voted no. All the “yes” electorates were in the big city centres where a narrow strata has benefitted from the economic restructuring driven by global markets over the past two decades.
		Electoral maps depicting the results show islands of “yes” voters around the corporate and financial headquarters of Sydney, Melbourne and other state capitals, encircled by a sea of “no” voters stretching from the industrial suburbs into the remote heart of the continent.

		NSW voters who had moved house since the 2004 federal election were urged to check they were correctly enrolled to vote, while those Australian citizens who had not enrolled were urged to do so promptly because their last chance would be the day the federal election was called.

		Using a quasi-semi case–control study design (sans controls), I studied interim results of the October 2004 Australian federal election and weather patterns on election day to test the hypothesis that there is a relationship between weather and voter behaviour, and that it is significant enough to have an electoral impact.
		For three of the five electorates with a swing to the Labor Opposition sufficient to change hands, the weather was not fine, and indeed was predicted to worsen during the day.
		Possible improvements to the study include use of a historical cohort design, in which weather data are collected for each electorate on serial election days and compared between electorates which changed party and those that did not.
