  Labor Right - Definition, explanation
The Labor Right is the organised faction of the Australian Labor Party (the Right) that makes up the more economically liberal and socially conservative members of the ALP.
The Right is currently the dominant faction in the Labor party, with leader, Kim Beazley, and a majority of the shadow Ministers coming from this faction.
A criticism of the dominance of the Right in the ALP is that it has led to a situation where the Liberal and Labor parties are virtually identical on some serious issues of policy, in particular economics.

The Labor Right is the organised faction of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) that tends to be more economically liberal and socially conservative.
The Right is most famous for its support of the economic rationalist policies of the Hawke and Keating governments, including the introduction of competition in the Australian finance and telecommunications industries, enterprise bargaining and the floating of the Australian dollar.
A criticism of the dominance of the Right in the ALP is that it has led to a situation where the Liberal and Labor parties are virtually identical on some serious issues of policy, in particular economics and national security.

Global Labor Strategies: GLOBALIZING WORKER RIGHTS
The International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights - adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1966 and signed by 149 countries - ensures "the right to strike, provided that it is ex-ercised in conformity with the laws of the particular country." It, too lacks means of enforcement.
For, without the right to collectively withhold their labor to protect their interests and bargain for conditions of employment, workers are subject to involuntary servitude, an employment relationship banned by the Thirteenth Amendment and various international treaties.
While some in the labor movement reject the importance of international labor standards because of the lack of enforcement power, corporations are increasingly concentrating their efforts toward affecting enforceable standards at the international level.

Australian Labor lurches to the right after election debacle
This is essential for Labor to extend its unqualified support to the current troop commitment and to endorse demands from Washington, should they arise, for further Australian participation in the next months.
Labor will also jettison its limited eleventh hour promise, made on the eve of the election in order to win Green preferences, to review the logging of old growth forests in Tasmania.
She went on to lament: “Many people of goodwill are looking to Labor to recapture its central role in Australian political life and to stimulate debate about the future direction of our country beyond the appeal of short-term self-interest.” She called for people to join Labor to “help generate the culture of progressive ideas”.

Within days, various Labor apparatchiks were politically knifing each other over Labor's failure in the election, which saw a record 7.8 percent swing against the Howard Liberal-National Party government but only a slight rise in Labor's record low 1996 vote of less than 39 percent.

Labor Right leaders savaged | The Australian
LABOR'S Right faction bosses in Victoria, who include powerbrokers Stephen Conroy and Bill Shorten, faced heavy criticism at a meeting held yesterday to dissect the damaging round of preselections held over summer.
The recent tensions within the party's Right have centred on the push supported by the faction's leadership group to replace Mr Crean and veteran Labor MPs Bob Sercombe and Gavan O'Connor with their own favoured candidates.
But sources close to the Australian Workers Union general secretary said his interest in factional politics was at an all-time low and he was primarily focused on the Beaconsfield mine disaster.

Leftwrites » Labor: right, right, right
I thought electing Rudd to the leadership was the right thing to do – because he had more appeal to the electorate – and given the desperation of the labour movement due to Workchoices, we have to win the next election.
But once a Labor government is elected, there will be legal action, not in individual cases, though one case might be the initial impetus, it will be over the fact that we have never had a right to strike in law till Keating gave it to us, and now it’s gone.
Yet the right to arm bears is obsolete and will not protect you against your own government any more (in fact, I think it referred to the right to raise a militia, rather than to protect yourself against grannies with Thompson guns).

The caucus rejected a proposal which would have forced the left Labor faction, NOLS, to choose between dealing with the NBL or dealing with the Labor right Unity faction, thereby breaking up the NOLS-Unity alliance which has been the lynchpin of Labor dominance.
As a result, the two Labor factions were able to increase their hold on the national union, capturing a majority of office-bearer positions.
NBL's decision not to challenge the Labor factions prompted a walkout by delegates from Resistance, which had helped to found the NBL and to set its initial anti-bureaucratic stance.
