At the 2004 election the Coalition won 87 seats (Liberal 75, National 12), to the Labor Party's 60 seats.
The Australian Democrats are expected to lose their remaining Senate representation, since all their four Senators are up for re-election and their performance remains consistently poor in the polls.
Given the result of the 2004 election, it is more likely than not that the 2007 election will be a regular election, and not a double dissolution election.

Including all 80 by-elections between 1965 and 2004, the average period between a vacancy occurring and a by-election being held has been 73 days, 65 days for Marginal seats (less than 10% margin), 60 days for safe Government seats and a much longer 104 days for safe Opposition seats.
It appears that fixed general election dates have given MPs more opportunity to consider their future rather than be rushed to re-nominate by the calling of a snap election.
The first is that governments tend to have their best by-election results in their first term, with the exception of the first Greiner government between 1988 and 1991.

I see that he isn't your typical hack and that he seems quite suited to a ministerial position, but I still think that it is mega weird to give a job as important as immigration to someone who while they may be talented, has yet find their footing in parliament.
Applying the upper house results from the 2002 state election to the proposed boundaries, four of the eight new regions would split evenly, electing two ALP, two Liberals and one Green.
At the moment I think only four people are capable of leading the ALP to a 2007 victory under 'normal' circumstances, that is the economy doesn't go A over T and government senate control doesn't alienate too many people.

I supported Amend.23 in 2000 as a way to correct the chronic underfunding of K-12 during the 2 decades of Republican legislative control prior to its passage.
The difficult decision on whether or not to have an abortion is a private one between a woman and her doctor, and should not be up to some government bureaucrat.
I do not support legislation that would further chip away at a woman's constitutionally protected right to privacy.
