"Beyond Ideology" - A Speech by Tony Abbott on Liberal Party Philosophy [January 6, 2001]
The essential principle animating the Federation Fathers (whether conservative protectionists or liberal free traders, they mostly ended up in the first version of an Australian liberal party within a decade) was citizens’ greater freedom to pursue their individual destinies within the framework of a new nation.
An issue to ponder during the Centenary year is Australians’ long-standing reluctance to support equality of outcomes ahead of an ideal of equal opportunity and whether Labor’s passion for levelling down was a peculiar by-product of the era of robber baron capitalism.
Australian voters are no more inclined than others to believe that “what’s good for General Motors is good for America” which is why politicians go to such lengths to demonstrate that sectoral policies are good for everyone in the long term and really a way to secure the national interest.

Australian House of Representatives moves to affirm support for heterosexual marriage - Wikinews
The Australian House of Representatives yesterday discussed as part of private Member's business a motion moved by Michael Johnson (Australian Liberal Party, Division of Ryan) that sought to affirm and "celebrate" support for marriage "between a man and a woman" and called on the Government to "enact policies that promote and strengthen marriage".
Johnson discussed the earlier amendment to the Australian Marriage Act passed in 2004 that effectively removed the possibility for same-sex marriage, and continued that the failed efforts of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) to provide for civil unions within that state was a matter for "grave alarm".
Margaret May (Liberal, Division of McPherson), the seconder of the motion, recommenced arguing against same-sex marriage, calling it a "social experiment", and went on to state, "Same sex relationships, or, indeed, unions should not have the same status as a marriage between a man and a woman".

Australian Liberal Party prime minister John Howard is under siege from leading sections of the media and financial elite over his attempts to shore up his government's flagging electoral support with rural and regional voters.

Liberal state premier Jeff Kennett, a prominent advocate of big business interests, privatisation and the slashing of public expenditure, was swept from office in a huge swing against his government, particularly in regional areas.

Like other social democratic parties, Labor tends to believe that government is generally a positive force in the community and that it is the responsibility of governments to intervene in the operation of the economy (and society in general) to improve outcomes.
Indeed, during the 1980s the party was responsible for the introduction of many economic policies such as privatisation of government enterprises (such as the Commonwealth Bank, which was itself established by an earlier Labor government), and deregulation of many previously tightly-controlled industries, which are normally the province of conservative governments.
The DLP helped the Liberal Party of Australia remain in power for almost two decades but was successfully undermined by the Whitlam Labor Government during the 1970s and ceased to exist as a parliamentary party after the 1974 election.

Canada's governing party faces disaster as nation swings right - World
Prime Minister Paul Martin's centrist Liberal Party is often referred to as Canada's natural governing party because it has run the country for 61 of the past 75 years.
At 46, Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper is the youngest of the leaders of the main parties.
The party has no natural allies, so a minority government would be weak, although some analysts say it is possible they could win a majority of seats.

As I’ve argued before, there are at least three different layers to the right liberal parties.
Liberal individualism is based on the idea of an atomised, autonomous individual who is free to create himself in any direction.
Finally there are right liberals who try to add an element of conservatism to the previous core layers of liberalism.

PWHCE: Discord in the Australian Democrats
The conflicting emotions that were aroused during the ALP Whitlam Government's tenure (1972 -1975), the role that the Senate played in deferring supply and the controversial circumstances surrounding the government's downfall were crucial determinants which contributed to the Australian Democrats later emergence in 1977.
The Australian Democrats' policies were socially liberal and in keeping with the legacy of the defunct Australia Party; the only real issue that distinguished the party from the political mainstream was its opposition to Australia's alliance with the United States and its advocacy of a ban on uranium mining.
During her tenure as Australian Democrats leader Haines (1986 to 1990) gave a lot of leeway to individual Australian Democrat Senators to the point that she seemed to be a figurehead.

John Valder, a prominent member of Australia's conservative Liberal Party, called America a war criminal and the liberation of Iraq "the greatest act of aggression by any Western nation since the days of Hitler's Germany", neatly putting Bush, Blair and Howard on par with Adolf Hitler.
It's true that soldiers are dying but Valder, and his few Liberal Party supporters, ignores several vital facts: to begin with, they are dying in defence of liberty, something that will never by said of Valder and his media friends.
Liberating 23 million people from a murderous despot is now a crime, or so says the humanitarian Mr Valder, on par with "the greatest act of aggression by any Western nation since the days of Hitler's Germany".

Closely associated with the United Australia Party, the financial and organisational support of the League was a key factor in the foundation of the Australian Liberal Party in 1944.
In return for the support of their membership and considerable financial backing, the AWNL obtained two key undertakings from Robert Menzies: there was to be equal gender representation throughout the Liberal Party, and that the AWNL be permitted to continue within the new party's structure, as the Women's Section.

 Political demographics re-aligned - On Line Opinion - 15/5/2002
In the case of the Liberal Party, it needs to examine itself in the context of the faintly emerging fissure in its supporter base, that may one day tear it apart.
The Liberal Party, like Labor, operates in a practical sense on a model of society that existed in the 1950s: local branches that meet at 8 o’clock in the evening with an agenda that consists of reviewing expenditure on mail-outs, and where policy debate is actively discouraged beyond moving motions that support your party's position.
At the Party’s recent Federal Council, policy debate could have been mistaken for some slapstick comedy sketch, where everyone fell over themselves in a desperate attempt to be the first to agree with each other.

The judges said that in a year when there were many outstanding books to chose from, “Australian Liberals and the Moral Middle Class” stood out as an exemplary instance of Australian scholars being at the cutting edge of the discipline of history, genuinely opening up new avenues for future enquiry.
