Australian referendum, 1967 (Aboriginals) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is frequently stated that the 1967 referendum gave Aboriginal people Australian citizenship and that it gave them the right to vote in federal elections.
In his speech on the referendum legislation, the Prime Minister, Robert Menzies, said that Section 51 would not be altered so that the possibility of laws discriminating against Aborigines could not be enacted.
The referendum was carried, with a close to ninety-one per cent of the voters supporting the alterations.

Constitutional Referenda in Australia (Research Paper 2 1999-2000)
Many Australians have benefited from the social services amendment of 1946, while Australia's indigenous population regards the Aborigines referendum of 1967 as a major landmark in their relationship with the Australian political system.
Australian voters have been cautious, and conservative at times, but they have shown their willingness to accept change when persuaded that such change is sensible or right.
In summary, the position is the same as for referendum Bills passing both Houses: the Government advises the Governor-General whether or not to issue the writ for a referendum.

Australians did not learn of the executions until long after the men were buried and, as a consequence, passed the Australian Defence Act the following year which made certain that Australian soldiers under British command could not be executed.

The ANZAC myth is that the Australian soldier is a demi-god like figure, tall, bronzed, a bit of a larrakin, disdainful of authority and other traditional military practice (unless it's earned in their eyes), with an amazing bravery unseen in soldiers of other countries and an affectionate comradeship for each other.
Australian soldiers had to trudge almost knee deep in mud with guns that mostly dated from WWI, fighting ferocious Japanese, who were starving so much they either ate off the land or ate dead Australian soldiers.

This is despite Australians being overwhelmingly in favour of a republic.
The changes of Australians voting in November for a republican constitution have been increased by a decision to focus the referendum question on Elizabeth Windsor, the British "Queen." The monarchist Prime Minister, John Howard, has agreed that Australians should be asked whether they want the "Queen" to be replaced by a president.
February 1998.The Australian constitutional convention endorsed a proposal by the Australian Republican Movement that the "Queen" of Britain should be replaced as the Australian head of state by a president elected by the Australian parliament.

Australian republic referendum, 1999 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 1999 Australian referendum was a two question referendum held on 6 November 1999.
Firstly, Australians have traditionally been cautious about proposed constitutional change: only 8 out of 43 referenda since 1909 have been approved by a majority of voters in a majority of states (as they must be to succeed).
Despite the hopes of radical republicans such as Phil Cleary, the referendum defeat was generally viewed as a setback for the republican cause and no further referenda on the subject were mooted by the Howard government.

The Committee on Australian Universities, chaired by Sir Keith Murray, had recommended that careful consideration should be given to the relationship between the existing Australian National University and the Canberra University College which, prior to 1960, had prepared students for the degree examinations of the University of Melbourne.
Accordingly, he arranged for the Australians to attend as representatives of the Academy, and at the same time suggested the establishment of a committee, to be chaired by Huxley, to 'deal with questions of justification, telescope design, and Anglo-Australian co-operation'.

The referendum of the 17th November, 1928 approved an amendment to the Australian constitution concerning financial relations between the Commonwealth of Australia and its states.
Technically it was a vote on the Constitution Alteration (State Debts) Act 1928, which, after being approved in the referendum, became law on the 13th February, 1929.
The purpose of the amendment was to ensure the constitutionality of the Financial Agreement which had been reached by the federal and all state governments in 1927.

Constitution Alteration (State Debts) 1928 sought to insert section 105A which would in effect ratify the Financial Agreement which had already been accepted by all the Australian Governments.
This terminated the system of per capita payments which had been in operation since 1910, and restricted the right of each State to borrow for its own development by subjecting that borrowing to control by a Loan Council.
