Australian Radio news was available in the early days in a prototypal form with the stories taken from the newspapers.
Perhaps the finest hour in Australian television was the broadcast of "The Moonlight State" on 11 May 1987 when Australia's premier investigative journalist, Chris Masters, demonstrated on film the illegal booze joints, the prostitution, and the gambling dens whose existence had been long denied by the self-righteous government of the state of Queensland.
Thus deprived of Australian stories on the screen, when the 1970s Renaissance occurred, the subject of the programming tended to be the indigenous classics, and contemporary themes which depended on a distinctly Australian flavor.

More commonly, however, the emphasis is on "families" of television programmes, so each chapter discusses one example of a genre: a topical variety show, a current affairs show, a police drama, a miniseries, a sensational soap opera, etc..
Then the importance of the programme to the history of Australian television is discussed, in terms of introducing Australian audiences to home-grown television drama, with Australian locations and voices, so leading "directly to the creation of two other Crawford's cop shows...
Finally, his repeated claim that there is no substantive writing on Australian television programmes themselves is undermined by the frequent references he makes to the writing of others, and the number of such works cited in the bibliography.

Australian Programming (Aboriginal)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Although in some ways Australian television has provided little representation of that continent's Aboriginal inhabitants, in others it is impossible to overstate the importance of Aboriginality to the medium.
Ernie Dingo is responsible for a large amount of the Aboriginal representation on Australian television in the early 1990s.
Rather than simply ensuring reception of broadcast television, BRACS would provide rebroadcasting and program making facilities in order to allow Aboriginal communities to decide for themselves how much of the material received should actually be shown in their communities, and to make their own material to replace that which they did not want.

Television drama output centres Aboriginal issues and lives in mini-series, Rose against the Odds (1991) and Women of the Sun (1982); and feature films screened on television such as Backlash (1986) and Tudawalli (1988).
This is affecting the conduct and budget of Australian television producers from news and current affairs to documentary and feature film producers to television advertisers (and causing considerable tension between Aboriginal groups and the film and television industry in the process).
Aboriginal television needs to be understood and placed within this context, as it simultaneously enables and circumscribes the form and direction of Aboriginal television: the actions taken, the plans developed, and the lobbying undertaken by Aborigines with respect to television.

Australian television launched the careers of Nicole Kidman, Kylie Minogue, Guy Pearce, Paul Hogan, and Skippy the Kangaroo.
Certainly cult television would be the poorer without dramas like Sons and Daughters (with the infamous Pat the Rat), Prisoner/Prisoner--Cell Block H (featuring the dyke-you-love-to-hate), and Return to Eden (heroine escapes jaws of crocodile--just--and takes on new body, face, identity).
The inclusion of "Australian content" in drama, documentaries, comedy and other types of programming is a cornerstone that, although significantly eroded since the glory days of the 1960s and 1970s, is still in place.

Under Annex II, the expenditure requirement on Australian content for subscription television is limited to 10 per cent of total program expenditure (which can rise to 20 per cent for drama channels, but only on conditions that allow the US to challenge).
Canada has a mixture of local content requirements on subscription television that varies from 16 to 100 per cent of transmission time to be local programming depending on the nature of the service (with an average of 35 per cent) plus 5p er cent of gross revenues to be spent on Canadian programs.

American television sitcoms have consistently reflected the presence of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people, often in distorted and stereotyped ways, but occasionally in ways that acknowledge our humanity and complexity.
The recent efflorescence of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and queer themes in Australian film must be placed in the context of a film industry that, prior to the 1970s, was characterized by social conservatism and censorship.
Until recently, British television embraced lesbians and gays as Them rather than Us, but a more diversified and nuanced approach to all kinds of sexuality is likely to be the case in the future.
