  Birds, DNA, and Evolutionary Convergence
Thus, the beautiful Australian fairy wrens are not related to our wrens at all, the nuthatch-like sittellas and tree-creepers are not related to nuthatches and creepers, and the red- and yellow-breasted Australian robins are not even thrushes.
All in all, the Australian bird convergence is even more spectacular than the convergence of various marsupials with the placental mammals that dominate on all other continents -- after all the mammalian convergence was recognized early on, while the birds fooled biologists until very recently.

 Honeyeater
Like their closest relatives, the Maluridae (Australian wrens), Pardalotidae (pardalotes and thornbills[?]), and Petroicidae (Australian robins), they originated as part of the great corvid radiation[?] in Australia/New Guinea (which were joined in a single landmass until quite recently, in geological terms).
Although they look and behave very much like other nectar-feeding passerines around the world (such as the sunbirds[?] and flowerpeckers[?]), they are unrelated, and the similarities are the consequence of convergent evolution.
A great many Australian plants are fertilised by honeyeaters, particularly the Proteacae[?], Myrtaceae[?], and Epacridacae[?].

News in Science - Native bird too smart for predatory cuckoo - 14/03/2003
Wrens lay their eggs over about five days, and it is important for the cuckoo to lay her egg in the middle of this period.
The researchers established that one of the triggers for a wren to abandon its young is a single chick in the nest.
Australian fairy-wrens have a very long breeding season, which allows them the luxury of abandoning their chicks and starting again.

 Science Fair Projects - Maluridae
Commonly known as wrens, they are unrelated to the true wrens of the Northern Hemisphere.
With further morphological work and the great strides made in DNA analysis towards the end of the 20th century, their position became clear: the Maluridae are one of the many families to have emerged from the great corvid radiation in Australasia.
Their obvious similarity to the wrens of Europe and America is not genetic, but simply the consequence of convergent evolution between more-or-less unrelated species that share the same ecological niche.

 Softbills
Many softbills are very small birds, such as the fairy wrens (many softbills weigh less than 20 grams, some less than 10 grams, some 7 grams or less!!), so any health issues have to be undertaken with a degree of urgency and the need to have rapid access to a avian veterinarian is an advantage.
Wrens should never be housed in a bare aviary devoid of adequate cover.
CAUTION: Wrens are very small birds so care must be taken to ensure the wire mesh or cage front is not too wide to allow any birds, including the young, to escape or get their head stuck.

Cuckoos warned: don't mess with the superb fairy wren - smh.com.au
In the war between cuckoos and the birds they trick into raising their young, Australia's superb fairy wrens have turned out to be the smartest of the lot.
Dr Langmore, with British colleagues, discovered superb fairy wrens were the exception to the rule by studying more than 200 of their nests in Canberra's Campbell Park.
The fact that the breeding season for wrens in Australia is much longer than for birds troubled by cuckoos in Europe may explain why it is worthwhile for the Australian wrens to re-nest and attempt a second family.

To be sure, Mayr had pointed out that an Australian cuckoo-shrike here and a whistler there had established itself in South-East Asia; but to think that whole groups of Eurasian vertebrates, such as its front-fanged snakes and song bird families, could have stemmed from Australian ancestors was thinking the unthinkable.
One part was the northern rim of the Australian plate itself and the other a string of islands off the north-east coast, away from Laurasia.
Thus the Australasian flycatchers are not related to Eurasian flycatchers but to Australian butcherbirds and cuckoo-shrikes; and the Australian wrens and warblers are not related to their namesakes in Eurasia, but to the Australasian honeyeaters and robins.

Getting their own back on cuckoos: Australian fairy-wrens have the last laugh
A team of scientists from Cambridge University and Bristol University, led by Dr Naomi Langmore of the Australian National University, has found that some Australian birds are one step ahead of their British counterparts in their ability to avoid being victimized by cuckoos.
"One possibility is that the Australian breeding season is longer, meaning that birds have more to gain from abandoning a breeding attempt at such a late stage.
Australian birds have plenty of time for renesting which simply isn’t available to the British hosts".

The Native Currant (Acrotriche depressa) and Honeypots (Acrotriche serrulata) belong to an interesting group of Australian heath plants called the epacrids.Little is known about the pollination and reproduction of epacrids with seventy-eight species regarded as poorly known in Australia.
Both species produce fruit, nectar and pollen that provide a food source for many different native animals so would be valuable inclusions in revegetation efforts. The Native Currant is used to make jam on Kangaroo Island and could be used as a possible native food crop if it were easier to grow.
Thornbills, honeyeaters, possums and Antechinus also eat nectar from these plants. The berries produced by Honeypots and Native Currant are eaten by Australian wrens, quail thrushes, silvereyes, honeyeaters and parrots among other birds.
