  Australidelphia - Wikipedia

Marsupial - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are two primary divisions of Marsupialia: the Ameridelphia, American marsupials; and the Australidelphia, Australian marsupials.
The Order Microbiotheria (which has only one species, the Monito del Monte) is found in South America but is believed to be more closely related to the Australidelphia.
Those in Ameridelphia are often called "opossums", while those in Australidelphia are "possums".

Evolutionary Biology - Phylogeny of Marsupials based on phosphoglycerate kinase DNA sequences
Major shifts in our understanding of the relationships of marsupials remain possible.
For instance, in 1982 Szalay separated the group into two cohorts, the Ameridelphia, restricted to the Americas, and the Australidelphia, comprising all Australasian marsupials and, surprisingly, the South American "monito del monte" Dromiciops australis.
In this study (reported in Molecular Phylogeny and Evolution 11: 13-26) partial sequences were obtained for phosphoglycerate kinase (Download

The order is known only from South American; currently, Dromiciops is found in the Andes of Chile and Argentina.
While not diverse, microbiotheres are especially interesting because they may be more closely related to Australian marsupials (Cohort Australidelphia) than to any South American family.
This tentative conclusion is based on both anatomical and molecular investigations (summarized by Aplin and Archer, 1987).

These central Australian fossil taxa might be referred to either Australidelphia or Ameridelphia, and it is recommended that both be treated as Marsupialia incertae sedis until further material comes to light.

Living marsupials are generally divided into Ameridelphia and Australidelphia.
However, this becomes problematic when fossil taxa are taken into account.

 ADW: Metatheria: Information
It divides marsupials into two "Cohorts." The Cohort Ameridelphia contains two neotropical groups, the families Didelphidae and Caenolestidae, and in addition a number of extinct groups.
The Cohort Australidelphia contains 16 families of living (or in one case, Thylacinidae, probably recently extinct) families, several extinct groups, and one family, Microbiotheriidae, that is found only in the Andes of Argentina and Chile.
These 18 families are placed in 7 orders.

These authors (but others may disagree) divide Marsupialia into three cohorts and an order of uncertain affinities.
The other two, (Ameridelphia and Australidelphia), can ultimately be blamed on this group of opossum-like critters.
Another view, (Cifelli, 2004), would be to extend Ameridelphia to include alphadelphians and stem-taxa such as Kokopellia.

The common name for opossums in America is "opossum" and in Australia is "possum." This is to distinguish between the two cohorts and the distinct species they contain.

In this paper, Alphadelphia, Ameridelphia and Australidelphia are three successive grades, of which the last just so happens to be holophyletic (an uninteresting side fact that isn't even mentioned), because it hasn't produced any descendants yet.
