For example, in ghostfrogs (Heleophryne), a Gondwanan group with no close relatives, five out of the six recognised species are restricted to the Cape Fold Mountains.
The mountain lizards (Tropidosaura and Australolacerta) are at the base of an enormous radiation of lacertid lizards throughout Africa and Europe, yet these genera are only found in the mountains of South Africa, with three out of six species restricted to the Cape Fold Mountains.
Mountain toads (Capensibufo) are another enigmatic group restricted to the Cape Fold Mountains.
