The 1900 summer Olympics were held in Paris, the 1904 in St. Louis, and in 1908, the summer Games were originally awarded to Rome (Johnson, 20-24).
If Greece had become the permanent host of the Olympics, perhaps not only their goal would have been more easily obtained but also the future surge of politics in the Games could have been prevented, but the IOC decided that other major cities deserved equal opportunity for the prestige of sponsoring the Olympics (Kanin, 30).
The 1980 Olympic controversy was one of democracy versus communism, with the United States political system exploiting their chance for confrontation to the fullest without risk of violating nuclear stalemate.
