Austria legislative election, 1986 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The elections of 1986 marked a major turning point in Austrian politics, since it resulted in the creation of a "grand coalition" between the SPÖ and the ÖVP which continued until 1999.
These were also the first elections when the Greens entered parliament, following a merger between a left-wing and a right-wing green party, neither of which had obtained a sufficient number of votes to gain seats in parliament in 1983.

Austria accordingly functions as a parliamentary democracy : for all intents and purposes, the cabinet is subject to approval by the National Council, the president being little more than a figurehead.

Austria's constitution is guided by the rule of law and based on the republican, democratic and federal principles as well as on the strict division of legislative and executive powers and of the judiciary and administration.
The excellent election returns of the last few years, which reflect the growing confidence of the voters in the party’s political work, are seen by the party leaders as making it incumbent upon them to defend the interests of Austrian citizens to the best of their ability.
Austria's economic prosperity and the calm political atmosphere at home are due to a great extent to the smooth cooperation between the two main interest groups, workers and employers, cooperation which has become institutionalized in Austria to a greater extent than in virtually any other democratic nation.

 Austrian Information
Elections in Austria are based on the principle of proportional representation, which has been reasserted in the provisions governing elections to the Nationalrat which entered into force on 1 May, 1993.
The Federal President is elected directly by the people in an election in which voting is compulsory in those provinces that have passed the corresponding provincial legislation.
Federal legislation is the responsibility of the Nationalrat and the Bundesrat, respectively the lower and upper chambers of the Austrian Parliament.

President of Austria - Art History Online Reference and Guide
Since Austria had not finalized its decision to structure itself as a federation prior to the formal implementation of the definitive Constitution of Austria on October 1, 1920, referring to Seitz as Federal President would have been inaccurate.
Voting is open to all of those entitled to vote in elections to the National Council and, in practice, this means that suffrage is universal for all of those over the age of eighteen.
Though Austria now was a dictatorship in all but name, power was concentrated in the hands of the chancellor, not those of the president.

In the 1994 elections however, the Republican success was built on a largely radical Right-populist campaign against President Clinton and the Democratic Congress.
In the California gubernatorial election, exit polls showed that by far the motives most important motives in the reelection of Pete Wilson were his vigorous support of the illegal immigration initiative, the related issue of crime and his successful charge that his opponent lacked conviction in support of the death penalty.
To accept this view is to believe that the continuing string of FPÖ electoral successes since the election of Haider as Chairman, which at this writing extends to sixteen state and three federal elections, is due to the growing neo-Nazi and Right-extremist sentiment that is often attributed to it.

 Australian Financial Review -
Socialist Heinz Fischer won Austria's presidential election on Sunday, defeating the country's foreign minister in a blow to the conservative government of Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the campaign was the role played by Haider, whose Freedom Party has been the junior coalition partner since 2000, staying in power after the last legislative election in 2001 for a four-year term.
But OeVP general secretary Reinhold Lopatka said the election was "no lesson since it was relatively close and in any case was a personality contest" rather than a review of the government.

Austria legislative election, 1999 - Enpsychlopedia
From 1983 to 1986, the SPÖ, under the leadership of Fred Sinowatz, headed a coalition government with the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), which was then led by Norbert Steger, a liberal; this coalition broke when the right-wing politician Jörg Haider became the leader of the FPÖ.
In the 1999 election campaign, Wolfgang Schüssel, leader of the ÖVP since 1995, announced that his party would not be part of next government if it should fall behind its current second place.
From 1971 to 1983, the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) had ruled the country alone, receiving an absolute majority of both votes and seats in the national elections of 1971, 1975, 1979 under the leadership of Bruno Kreisky.

FPÖ: From Protest to radical Right-Populism. The Freedom Party of Austria 1990-1996
When, following the 1986 election, the ÖVP accepted the invitation of the SPÖ to end its sixteen year absence from government, it moved to the Center, precisely at the time that a considerable segment of the electorate was becoming susceptible to the right-radical populism that had been growing in other Western-style democracies throughout the 80's.
Austria today, despite the budget crisis and debt problems that exploded as political issues in 1995, enjoys one of the world's highest standards of living and has matured as a democratic republic in the past fifty years.
Although ORF chose not to air the video showing Haider's speech at the gathering until after the election, it was widely and misleadingly reported in the press that he had called SS -veterans his "dear friends" and praised them for their character and convictions.
