EUbusiness - Haider's struggling far-right party uses EU sanctions as election campaign theme
Tuesday, an opinion poll placed it last with only nine percent of the votes in the upcoming European election, down from a historic 27 percent in the November 1999 legislative polls.
Joerg Haider's far-right party is mounting a vitriolic populist campaign for the upcoming European Union elections, accusing a Social Democratic candidate of "treason" for backing EU sanctions against Austria when his Freedom Party became a junior partner in the ruling coalition.
Buoyed by his recent victory in recent provincial elections in Carinthia, Haider has been resorting to populist slogans to breathe new life into his xenophobic party, which is in a freefall in the polls, according to commentators.

CIA - The World Factbook -- Field Listing - Background
Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian, but a coup in May 2000 ushered in a prolonged period of political turmoil.
Although nominally a constitutional democracy since 1991, the 1996 and 2002 presidential elections - as well as the 1999 legislative elections - were widely seen as being flawed.
Following the elections of a reformist president and Majlis in the late 1990s, attempts to foster political reform in response to popular dissatisfaction have floundered as conservative politicians have prevented reform measures from being enacted, increased repressive measures, and consolidated their control over the government.
