The Austrian Grand Prix was a Formula One race.
Since the larger portion of the modernized track, which was renamed A1-Ring after a sponsor, is located on the municipal territory of Spielberg, Spielberg was now given as the site of the Grand Prix.
The 2002 Austrian Grand Prix received negative publicity after Ferrari instructed Rubens Barrichello to cede his victory to Michael Schumacher (see photo); this led to the eventual banning of team orders which "artificially" determined the outcome of a race.

The 2002 Austrian Grand Prix was a Formula One race held on May 12, 2002 at the A1-Ring.
It was infamous for the "staged finish", where Rubens Barrichello was told to let Michael Schumacher past at the last curve, due to team orders.
Team orders were banned soon after this happened again that September at the United States Grand Prix (in which Schumacher returned the favor), on the grounds it artificially determined the race.

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has told one of Austria's newspapers the country will lose its place on the grand prix calendar because its government was bringing forward a ban on tobacco advertising to 2005.
Austria would be the second European country to lose their Grand Prix as a consequence of the battle over tobacco sponsorship.
The Belgian Grand Prix has already been dropped after the government in Brussels decided on a tobacco advertising ban from August 2003.

McLaren's David Coulthard was a surprise winner of the Austrian Grand Prix this afternoon, coming in ahead of championship rival Michael Schumacher and the German's Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barichello.
Barichello revealed afterwards that the team had ordered him to pull over at the final corner to allow Schumacher through and that he was upset not at finishing third but for losing out on finishing first.

Austria is the first victim of EU policy although the Belgian GP has also run into difficulties because of the Belgian government's desire to bring in a tobacco sponsorship ban before the EU ban in 2005.
This promoted close racing but was not as popular with the drivers or the public, although Austria never lacked crowds thanks to the fact that thousands of Schumacher fans were willing to take to their camper vans and drive down to watch the race.
The area around the A1 Ring did not really have the infrastructure needed for a modern Grand Prix and hotel accommodation in particular was always a problem.

David Coulthard's victory in Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix, completed a bitter sweet weekend for McLaren Mercedes following the death of Paul Morgan, co-founder of Ilmor Engineering in a plane crash the previous day.
Coulthard achived the 11th win of his career with an impeccable drive whilst team mate Mika Hakkinen failed to score for the fourth time this season and is thus looking as though he may be called upon to aid the Scot in his quest for the championship.
