 Austrian Civil War
The Austrian Civil War, also known as the February Uprising, is a term sometimes used for a few days of skirmishes between socialist and conservative forces between 12 February and 16 February 1934 in Austria.
In a close vote (on railway workers' wages) in the National Council, each of the three presidents of parliament resigned their position in order to cast a ballot, leaving nobody to preside over the meeting.
But the events of the Austrian Civil War had persuaded many in the political establishment (and, indeed, the population at large) that a slow pace of political reform was a small price to pay for social calm.

 ARG fmsb1 fleimstalbahn
An alternative plan, with a railway running south-west down the valley of the River Cembra to connect with the line at Lavis, north of Trento, was rejected, even though it would have been near the junction with the Ferrovia Treno-Malé at Mezzocorona, the local population instead preferring a north-facing connection with the rest of Austria.
The plan to drive a railway up the mountainside from Ora in the Adige Valley, then over the watershed into the Fiemme Valley, and thence into the Cembra Valley and Predazzo was resurrected, and a construction base was built at the south end of Ora station.
The Austrian General Army Staff specified that the railway should be able to move a brigade of men and equipment from end-to-end within 24 hours, and this dictated the size of the locomotives which were bought.

 German and Austrian Signalling
The first Austrian steam railway was the Kaiser Ferdinand Nordbahn, opening in 1836 from Vienna towards Brünn in Slovakia, a small segment of the important route from the Adriatic port of Triest to the North Sea.
The very earliest steam railways, those of the 1830's, used hand signals with red and white flags or lanterns, and the whistle of the engine (introduced 1833), to communicate between moving trains and the ground.
The Austrian semaphore signal is designed on the same principles as the German, but the arm is rectangular and pierced with 10 slots.

 Railways as World Heritage Sites
Railways were not the only technology to further the process of imperialism: the steamship, the telegraph, and new medicines such as quinine were also important.
Railway companies frequently came to own canals, while the transfer of technologies between the different modes occurred regularly, especially during the construction phase: railway lines were built by teams of men known in Britain and elsewhere as ‘navvies’ — derived from the name ‘navigator’ that groups of labourers acquired while building inland waterways.
Railway construction on the plains between 1858 and 1878, partly by the broad-gauge Eastern Bengal Railway (EBR) and partly by the metre-gauge state-owned Northern Bengal Railway (NBR), connected Calcutta with Siliguri, at the foot of the Himalaya.

Railways, in the modern sense, have been with us for some 170 years and for maybe half that time they were THE major form of long-haul transportation by land.
Sir Alexander Butterworth, of the North Eastern Railway, was the father of the composer George Butterworth killed on the Western Front in 1916 aged 31 and still remembered as a minor master of the "English folk song" school.
Important classical composers also found inspiration from the railway, although their music is fairly often still quite light-hearted, probably because characteristic railway rhythms suggest a dance or at least rhythmic music and light in touch.
